Had a 200 SW - replaced it with a 225 Yammy 4st ..................it would not be an understatement to say I get DOUBLE the fuel economy with the new motor, just as much get up and go and brilliant idle speed when mooring - yup, smile and walk away !
Yeh mate would love to buy a 4 stroke yammie but don't have that sort of money. The boat that the motor is on is a swiftcraft Viking. Flat out it does 35knots. Do you still think it would be thirsty at 20-25 knots?
Whilst all motors have a "sweet spot" of optimum economy (dependent upon prevailintg conditions) I never really found any speed that gave better than perhaps a 10% improvement once you got onto the plane and had a fuel flow monitoring device linked into my Navman so we did lots of testing trying to get better fuel stats ...............as long as the cost of fuel doesn't limit the times you can go fishing go for it as it is better to be out on tbhe water than not - you can always upgrade later as finances allow - that is what I did
After an accident upgraded to a 115 Etec. No smoke, noise down so at WOT you could still talk, and a 60litre fishing trip to a favourite spot turned into a 25l trip!!!. Would not EVER go back.
Comparing any older 2 stroke to a late model 4 stroke (or etec for that matter) is going to amount to somewhere around 50% less fuel usage on the newer model but available budget comes into it too - the price difference can buy a lot of fuel.
(other benefits of quietness, smoke free and increased travelling range aside)
Agreed too cransy. Love my new yammy but the old johno 2st I could fix at a pinch - not so anymore - hell even the tilt trim relay is a shop job (or at least not a part you'd be able to buy in anything but a major city - before I could have swapped one out of the car).
Don't regret it though...
Only problem I had with my johnny was swapping a tilt trim relay (bout $5 if you do it yourself) and bit of gunk in the carby's - again was a relatively easy fix.
still get it checked mate. All motors have a possibly "Friday Factor" built into it, purely because humans build them. You dont want a dud.
If its OK it in my experience was very reliable, albeit with the comments above about smoke, noise, thirsty. I had the 115 on a Trailcraft 5.4. I would guess it wont be very fast pushing a 5.8. I only ran mine at WOT every now and then, purely because 2S love this, but OMG it drank like a sailor in a Port at WOT, and that was barely 30knots. Cruising at about 22knot was very comfortable and didnt chew fuel as much. Still way more than my ETEC though.
Roughly 80 litres for a 45 NM return trip pretty consistent no matter what the conditions and that is on a 6.8 ally sea quest, I must say that the only trigger I had to replace it was a crankshaft warping that had never been seen before ....... With the super low interest finance deal I bit the bullet and replaced with a Yammy ..........as I said earlier as long as you can afford the poorer fuel economy of the two stroke go with it, they are very reliable .....took ours out to the islands several times without the slightest concern
Have always owned 2stroke motors and never had the pleasure of owning a 4 stroke motor so cant really give you a comparison but I've spent nearly a full day cruising and fishing around 3mile reef and direction bank recently. The boat's 80ltr inbuilt tank was full when we launched. At the end of the trip, we had about a quarter tank left (plus 2 full 20ltr jerry cans which was our back up fuel). My boat/motor sweet spot is about 3200rpm doing about 26knots. WOT is nearly 40knots. My motor year is 1999 which i believe is the same era as the one you're looking at. Mine is a V6 whereas yours is a V4 so fuel economy will be better with yours unless you WOT all the time. Personally i reckon 115hp on a 5.8mtr f/glass boat is under powered..
I had a Viking with and old Evinrude (1984) 140hp. Never measured the top speed but it cranked. Probably 40knots.
The beauty of the Viking and Dominator is that the deadrise at the rear of the hull is only about 14 degrees which while very shallow, give great lift and allows you to really fly over the water. I wouldnt be suprised if you got 35 knots out of it with the right prop.
My best mate has a 115hp Johnson 2 stroke from about 2004 on his 5.5m Genesis and happily goes out to the shelf off Leeman. Gets it serviced regulary and has never had an issue. Simple to fix as well.
yeh alright thanks mate, what did you think of the viking mate? this one is 84 good condtion but needs new canopy and a few other things doing to it, it has a 115 2003 two stroke johnson on it too. he wants 16000 but im thinking of puttin in a offer at 13500.
I loved it and would get another if in good shape. The wife thought it was ugly.
Check the transom for rot or major weakness under the outboard. Spend some time looking at the trailer. For my mind the trailer should not be overlooked.
At that age your offer price (depending on the trailer) would be about right. You could always go in lower. Has it been advertised for a while? If so, guage the guys eagerness to sell and make your offer accordingly. See if he is open to it being inspected, if not, walk away.
Yeh he doesn't need to sell it that's the thing it's just sitting in a shed down south in his holiday house. The hull is in perfect condition and the transom looks pretty good, I offered him 12 and he said no way. It needs new tyres all the safety gear new canopy new batteries new carpet and new seats so I thought my offer was pretty well right. I'm gonna offer him 13 and see what he comes back with

Have to agree with paulH
You will never get a positive 2S comparison to a 4S/ETEC.
But not everyone can fork out the bigger $$$ for a 4S/ETEC.
The motor I has (identical to the one you question) was very reliable, easy to fix with a little mechanical knowledge (not that I have much).
If it is all you can spend at the moment its not a bad 2S at all. But once you own one, go to a more modern engine you wont ever look back.
I read mu comments above and feel I was a little harsh on the poor Johno. When I had it didnt mind it.
