Hamilton Island

G'Day lads & ladies

I am fortunate enough to have a family trip from NOR Perth, east to Hamilton Island for a week.  We will be spending 5 days on board a 50ft Cat w/tender, followed by a couple of days on the island.

Just wondering whether anyone had any experiences regarding fishing amongst the islands? (NB: I have done a forum search & read the material)  I am hoping to get some updated information on their particular trip, what to expect & perhaps areas/species to keep an eye out for.

If we don't get any luck onboard the Cat which we skipper, we have organised to board a fishing charter for one of the days we are on the island.  The trip itself is not a 'fishing' trip, but a family trip that myself and my brother will take every opportunity to spin around in the tender looking for fish.

Cheers guys.

Me and the mrs got hitched on

Me and the mrs got hitched on Brampton island and being where it is I had to take my lil baitcaster and some lures, much to the confusement of local staff because its quite the honeymooners paradise and no bloke dares to bring fishing gear... Plenty of queenies and trevs etc just be sure to find out the no fish zones! The first morning I took about 13 steps from our villa on the beach and was catchin queenies every cast till later I found out it was a sanctuary zone! After tyin the knot on the beach we had a few pics around the resort and I thought itd be a good idea to get one of me mrs standin with her hands on her hips as I fished. To make it realistic (line in water) I casted out a popper and it got nailed by a queeny hah. Not many blokes can say they were onto a fish within 20min of tyin the knot aye! Hit some rocky areas on the island (whilst the mrs relaxed on the beach) and found some little GTs, fish rich tropics!

Hell yeah, you have got me excited tim-o!  Your story gave me a laugh, and I'll admit it would take a decent pair to take the rod to a wedding trip!

what size are we talking here?  Using light gear and small lures?  or could you get away with med-heavy gear and larger tackle.

How'd you scout your locations?  was it anything out of the ordinary?

Was a 3-6kg bait caster but id take a two piece spin rod so you can take it on the plane with you, prob a 10lb outfit for fun with fish up to say 50cm, all I used was a popper I always use on tailor here in Perth, love seein the woosh as a fish strikes it. As long as the tides movin, closer to high prob better, I cast around points or sandbars where the fish may hang waitn for baitfish caught in the current. Got the trevs around shallow rocky areas
