Handheld GPS units

When it comes to electronics I have absolutely no idea but I want to get myself a handheld GPS to take with me for both land-based missions and offshore. I'm after some advice on what's good, what's not, particular brands and what should I look out for in terms of features, specs etc. Looking to spend up to $500 on a good one that will last. All comments appreciated.
Cheers!

Garmin etrax is the best for the $$
great entry level and plenty of models but the Garmin 72 GPS is also great.
good size and strong robust unit but has enough megabite capacity to store plenty of points and you can interface with computer etc.
Garmin is my choice and as brenz says i have the etrax base model and i use it for fishing, trekking and 4WDing (only just bought a chartplotter after three 3 with my etrax).

Maps!
Thanks guys. Do most handheld GPS's already display detailed inshore and offshore maps or are capable of?

some GPS come with terrestrial maps
as this is there intended use predominately.
the base etrax does not allow you to upload as it has no capacity being so small. its designed to fit in your palm and you use your fingers to operate.
but there are plenty of options in the range and i would just look around but the 72 for its size has good capacity and i dont see why it wouldn't upload sea charts

Hi WODF,
These are some garmin products that might interest you.
I must admit I don't have one myself, but have been looking at these. The 400C does come with marine maps.
