Has anyone seen or tried the new Daiwa Emeraldas Colossal 2508R reel

They look like a pretty good, light sport fishing reel with 13 ball bearings and all the Daiwa bling.

I can see Matt (Hlokk) going for one of these.

This is Daiwa PR blurb

The all new Emeraldas lands on Australian shores
Daiwa’s legendary Real Four technology changed the way anglers used threadline reels, gone were the days that they were regarded as inferior. Real Four introduced Digigear and made threadlines become the number one choice for heavy duty fishing. In 2009 Daiwa introduce the amazing new Emeraldas Colossal 2508R reel, using all the Real Four technology, to produce one amazing reel that is guaranteed to become legendary.
The Real Four concept took it to the next level with the introduction of Hyper Digigear.

Hyper Digigear, the next generation of Digigear is made from a high intensity C6191 special alloy which was adapted from Saltiga’s legendary gearing system.

This new high accuracy miniaturization of Saltiga’s gearing was tested at over one million revolutions before showing any sign of wear and tear, that’s the equivalent of over 5 years of heavy fishing pressure. With technology and testing like this it’s no wonder Daiwa are the leaders in fishing tackle innovation.

The new Saltist overhead is also in that colouring. They do look pretty nice.

It is interesting as Shimano has gone for red with a ,ot of its new reels, including the new Stradics.

yes it has 7kg of drag but

Tue, 2009-07-21 21:50

yes it has 7kg of drag but completely different reel to the old Branzino 3000. The 2508 is based on the exist 3000 reel with a 2500 rotor and PE spool.

The new emeralda is designed as a more powerful reel than the old Emeralda. Believe or not...in Japan when you start catching big squid often you can wear out the reel quite quick.

My old Emeralda 2506 is in need of a new pinion and main gear. The new Emeralda is based on the Hyper Certate for strength and uses a deeper 2508 spool with 7kg drag compare to 2506's 3kg of drag

Hence why it costs alot more than the previous model. Im thinking of upgrading but...no $$$$

At that price, why would you go the emereldas over say the exists or certate hypers (which are a bit lighter(exists) and available in more sizes)? Hyper digigears on them is interesting though.

What is the reel aimed at?

Yes but you'll need the weight to balance out 8'+ long rods.

its not so much the size of the squid. Its more so to suit the longer rods...hence the extra weight. Its not as heavy as it says. I use a Certate Finesse 2506 for squidding and that wasnt a whole lot lighter. Infact its heavier now that Ive got the Breaden's ally frame double handle.

Not that heavy, but do you really need hyper digigears and a $900 pricetag for squidding in Australia? What does it really offer over the certate finesse for squidding for example?

Yeh well but you look good with it and it probably last longer than the previous Emeralda. Ive already replaced the pinion on mine.

I wish we could catch 4-5kg

Sat, 2009-07-25 20:49

I wish we could catch 4-5kg Aori squid in Perth, or even those 45kg Humbolt squid that attack scuba divers off California.

Wonder what the Perth record is???
