HDS10 1kw tranny HELP

Hey guys I just got given a 1kw transducer for my hds10 is there any point installing it if I'm only fishing upto 80 meters? Will it give me a better reading? Also the tranny is MASSIVE! Can you just bolt it onto the back of the boat like the existing one? Help would be much aappreciated

cheers Kristian

Probably not worth installing

Probably not worth installing it for sub 100m depths, what tranny do you currently have 50/200 or 83/200??

Not sure ay, whatever comes standard, I know if I install it though ill get curious and go out deeper haha, will it improve clarity and definition in shallower waters though?

Do you know if it's easy enough to just bolt on the back?

It the one you have is around the size of a match box it's the 80/200hz if it's around 4 matchboxes its the 50/200hz. It you have the 50/200 I wouldn't bother unless you are going a fair bit deeper at some stage.

don't know if it will make much difference in shallow water but maybe a little if anything. as far as just bolting it onto the rear did it come with any mount/bracket - if not you'll probably need to get one or make one up. with bracket its pretty simple to do but positioning is pretty vital for good readings whatever the tranny.

Thanks for the info mate much appreciated, i may as well fit it seeing as though I have it, it comes with a mounting bracket ect but the tranny weighs a ton! Just wondering if the fibre glass will hold it?

There was an almost identical thread one or two weeks ago.
If you do it make sure you update the settings to tell the sounder it has got a new transducer.

What is the one you have been

What is the one you have been given?  Is it a transom mount type like the TM260 TM258?

I would suggest if it is the correct one for your unit go for it you really can't go too wrong.

The elements in the 1Kw units are far bigger thats why its so big, having larger elements results in better sensitivy.

Most transducers are manufactured by airmar. So the first thing is have a look at airmars website it will give you a full run down of specs of the transducer cone angles etc but you need to identify it.  If your looking to target  demersals and if the transducer is a wide angle it could put you at a disadvantage. Who ever gave it to you must have too much money, I need friends like that.

HAha he owed me a few

HAha he owed me a few favours and works at a fishing store so I get some good deals, it's the TM260, setting up at the moment seems too easy haha, just seems like it will be way to heavy on the hull, need to get on the water and test it out, I've left the old transducer connected too, if I wanna switch back and forth between the 2 is it easy as just saying what tranny I've got connected?

On the transducer cable there

On the transducer cable there should be a silver sticker on the plug end close to where it plugs into the sounder this has the code on it - just find the same code on the list.  Not sure if the TM260 will have this though it might - you may find it on the airmar website maybe someone else can help with that one

Sorry RR the silver sticker will (should be) on your original Lowrance transducer cable - I wasn't sure if the TM260 would have it

after trying it myself the 1000w makes very little diff in sub 120m on my hds compared to the p66(which is half the size or even less)

the p66 pisses all over the the lowrance transducer though

couple it with the furuno 585 its a different story once u go deeper than 100
