hds10 trannie advice

Lads - old man just picked up a new/second hand boat and is putting a hds10 in as the old GPS was little worse for wear. Any suggestions on what is the pick transducer for these, I was thinking a 260 airmar through hull but happy to listen to advice from those who have them?

thanks mate, how would you compare these to the likes of a 585 furuno with the same tranny? I have that setup(furuno) on my boat but have just ordered the 270W as I had the 258.

Check

Simon might pay to check with Lucky Tim as he has run the HDS 10 and 585 side by side with the same tranny.

From his feedback I dont think he would buy another 10. Atleast not as a sounder once we got his 585 setup right.

I did that Simon, ran my HDS10 through a M260 in hull and it lasted about a fortnight before I did what I should have done first and put a 585 in. Running through the exact same transducer the 585 beats the HDS hands down as a sounder. I could never get the picture right on the Lowrance, it was moody, sometimes not even working in 50m of water. I've sounded over reefs that on the Furuno looked sweet and we nailed reds, jacks etc so for an experiment I sounded the same reef with the HDS and wouldn't have even dropped on what it displayed. Before anyone questions the settings I tried and tried and adjusted everything. It is a good GPS though but for $3k I'd do it differently if I had the chance again. If your Dad already has the HDS and another sounder is out of the question just get the standard transom mount tranny and pocket the $600 price difference.

furuno vs lowrance

Sun, 2011-06-05 20:26

i have a furuno 585 with 1kw and a hds 7 with the standard trans side by side and id have to say the furuno is way ahead! so much clearer to read!   but in saying that id like to see the lowrance with a 1kw transducer!

From the amount of posts on this topic I've read on here, it seems as though many have struggled to get the HDS units reading well. I seem to be one of a very few that seems to be happy with the unit.

I purchased a head unit only, as I already had a 50/200 [600w] tranny installed from a previous LCX unit. I had to mess around with the settings for a couple of hours on the water, but I have not looked back since. I haven't tested it out in terms of max depth but I always fish in 50+ mtrs and I'm always finding new ground, most of the time at speed. Perhaps I am lucky with my tranny setup, as I've never viewed a Furuno, I cannot make a comparison, as long as I keep coming home with fish, I'm happy with my choice.

can vouche for lucky on this one! he showed me whilst in exmouth the comparison between the 2 and it was amazing. Furuno looked the goods in 115m of water and the lowrance unfortunantly showed whiting bottom.... the comp winning red 2 big jacks and coro trout are testiment. i wouldnt have fished the ground in my boat!

in saying that tho i put a HDS 7 combo unit in the old mans boat and i really like it. i havnt got anything to compare dirrectly side by side tho!

Did find a lump in 110m of water out the back of the islands the other week that id love to see on another sounder! HDS didnt show a great deal but i rekon there'd be some good fish out there near the shelf on the right day and right conditions. next trip maybe......
