Help the new kid on the block.

Hey all,
I'm just looking for some tips and advice when fishing. I usually head down to Hillary's but never really catch much. So is there a certain location to go there? Or just go where ever you want? Also what sort of a rig should I use? and what sort of bait?
All help is much appreciated.
Thanks, Liam.

Hi Liam
Welcome to the site mate.
I'm not Perth based, so can't help you much, but there's plenty in here that fish Hillarys way, so you should get plenty of info.

Welcome Liam
What sort of fishing gear do you have? Hillarys can be a bit hit and miss, but the most consistent places I have fished there are near the lighthouse on the north wall, the disabled ramp on the north wall, behind Aqwa on the main wall and in front of Boy in a Boat reef on the main wall. I pretty much only fish before and just after dawn or just before and after dusk because of the blowies. I fish with at leat two rods. One lighter rod to throw our half mulies on small gang hooks or lures. The other rod I use a paternoster and bait it up with whole squids or mulies.
Any more questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks Colin
Right now i've just got some old rod that my Dad bought me ages ago. Looking at buying a new one. Any recomendations?
Also when you said throw out half mulies on the lighter rod. Is that unweighted?
Thanks, Liam

With regards to a rod, it depends on your budget
There are so many choices. A 9 foot StarloStix is a good choice or 10 foot Penn Spinfisher 6810.
If the conditions are suitable, I would definately be throwing out an unweighted half mulie.

hello, the disabled ramp on
hello, the disabled ramp on the north wall is where i have been too. using the running sinker rig to target whitings and the burley cage on main line rig to go for herring and gar. bait used where sandworm/squid for whiting, squid/prawns for herrings and gar.
agree with colin. bring two rods. one to cast around, the other to wait for the big one. big rays there but last week trip there was not too good.

For the herring and gardies
For the herring and gardies use a real light float and a couple of small hooks. I use a baitchaser rig and a float, then throw in a handful of berley near my bait. Or otherwise like Otoshi use a beley cage connected to a baitchaser rig (Small hooks usually with feathers on them) and cast it out and wind in very slowly. I use tiny pieces of mulies or prawns mostly. If you use maggots for bait you will catch twice as many. Also worth putting a bigger line out with a full mulie to try for a tailor or something bigger. Or even put out a fresh gardie or live herring if you get some, and see what happens.
Try first thing in the morning or just on sun down. During the middle of the day is usually a lot slower with the amount of bites/fish.
Good luck.
Danny.

if ur lazy like me buy a
if ur lazy like me buy a whiting rig from big w and maybe a heavier weight for it dpoending on the conditions put someprawns on it and chuck it out on a little flick rod.
you will catch heaps of whiting, yellowtail and skippy... (herring are a bit of a hit n miss atm)
on a bigger rod just have what Colin said....paternoster with whole mulie or if you dont wanna buy mulies chuck a small whiting or something on down to a star sinker throw it out anbd leave it while u catch stuff on the little rod.

Oh as somone else pointed
Oh as somone else pointed out. If you make your own, only bother using a chemical sharpened for the last hook. The rest are just to prop the bait up.

Just because they're more
Just because they're more expensive and if you're not hooking fish with them, then save the money.

I normally buy them by the box so they are not too
expensive, but I get your drift.(Colin 1 - Co-founding member of the prestigious Colin Club)

Places to buy things.
Thanks guys again,
Where's a good place to go to buy some things for my setup? Somewhere near Duncraig, Hillaries. Doesn't bother me to drive about 10-15 minutes either.
