Help with trailer bearing repair
Submitted by dant on Tue, 2013-11-12 12:33
Gday all,
seems like my bearings may have gone on my boat trailer, got to the ramp the other day, and they were red hot.
got a quote but it seems a little excessive, please PM me if your interested in doing the job and give me a quote if possible.
boat/trailer will be located in storage in ozzy park, would prefer to have it done there if possible.
Thanks Dan

hubs were hot on both sides, so i was guessing both could be gone.

lift it up off the ground,
lift it up off the ground, spin the wheels and shake them.
Would seem like a coincidence if all bearings were red hot suddenly so brakes may be the first thing.
Did the guy who quoted look at it or quote (estimate) over the phone?
Cos he might be quoting on everything

Unless thats for a dual axel
Unless thats for a dual axel I'd agree that's pricey. For bearings may be better off taking it to a regular mech shop rather than marine mech - or better still get someone else to do it but show you how for next time - it's pretty easy (even a mech retard could learn it) and a quick way to save some bucks. Rather spend the $450 on servicing or better yet a new reel!!

was just a quote over the phone and it was probably worse case scenario replacing the lot, but as you guys are saying would rather pay to bloke to show me how to replace them for next time.
if anyone is interested in showing me how to change them please let me know, and a price for your time.
Cheers all again for your help.

I've just put new 4 new Timken bearings in my trailer and on the back of the pack it has good fitting instructions. If you stop into supercheap and have a look on the packet then decide if its something you can tackle. 4 bearing sets and a tub of grease is $135.

once you learn its a good
once you learn its a good thing to do while the demersal ban is on each year. depending how much you use your trailer of course. I do mine on my work trailer every Christmas break. takes me bout 3-4 hours and a few beers to do 4 bearings. Flogging the race out of the hub is the hardest part. otherwise you can buy the whole hub assembly for not much more and it will take 15 min to change a bearing.

downside of oil filled is
downside of oil filled is that if the seal fails on a trip the lube is gone immediately with catastrophic results, where grease stays in place.
