help on upgrading to a real boat

looking to pick up something bigger than the tinny i got befor summer comes around. ive done some reserch but havent really come across any brands of boats that stick out and can only really go by what  pics i see on the net, looking for something that can get a few ks offshore, nothing major. What i would prefer is a runabout with as much deck space as possible with no seats exept a couple of foldaways up front. Can anyone point me in a direction of what sort of boats had these attributes and anything to look out for in the private adds as no-nos?. budget will be around the 5k mark.

Hope you don't take offence but for 5 k in a larger boat your going to have your hand in pocket all the time the motor is going to be old stay with what you got and keep saving nothing worse than having a boat that you can't use or breaks down

you must of had a bad experiance:P  you find clowns all the time selling gems they dont know they have. i pick at things and never buy the first of anything i see. smart buying should get me something. i dont really know brands and what is better built etc.  i want something i can stand on one side without everything going pear shaped basically.

You may find a boat around

Tue, 2011-07-05 19:38

You may find a boat around that price range but generally it will have an older motor or older hull and newer motor.

After having plenty of experience with older boats and motors, be prepared to spend some money on them. Things will break and it will have problems. But we can't all afford to have a new boat so buy something you can fix/maintain yourself to save some $.

You will find something that will give you plenty of pleasure at that price but the smaller you go the better boat you will get i'd say.

a list of boat sizes and motors that would power them niceley would be handy, as far as i can see a 15fter with a 60+ hp donk would do ok, getting the right power to weight/size is the first hurdle i need to figure out.

quintrex bayhunter some had smaller horse mercs fitted 40-60hp may find one slightly neglected with cosmetics for that price, also the old stacer 474 i think they were slightly older but weren't a bad boat, as others have said you will get what you have paid for and may pay more in the long run good luck

Hmmm 5k will get you a very nice tinny. I really do think your kidding yourself if you think your going to get something half decent for that price (and reliable). 8-10k maybe. But good luck will be very interested to hear how you go.

There is a 20foot fibreglass

Thu, 2011-07-07 16:23

There is a 20foot fibreglass boat just listed on Gummy for $4500 that in my book would be as good ,If it checks out on boat and hull, as you will ever find.

Has got a deeVee hull and the blurb about the engine could be correct as Evinrude's and Jhonno's will go for just about forever.

But;

Better factor in a continuou$ $pending of $$ on all $ort$ of bib$ and bob$ a$ you make a boat to your liking and configuration!

So the $4.5K might be the cheap part of your desire!

I am a little blind, but is that a stern drive. That might not be a bad investment for all the nicknack it might hold. Probably worth more in spare parts, trailer fixed etc.

Not a bad price for a 20fter, but has me very worried about its capacity to handle liquid!!!

Looking at that I reckon you would need to factor anothe 10-15k on getting the boat "sea worthy"  have you thought about maybe holding off another year and saving a bit more? For something newer/ less trouble??

nah ill find something, i still have the impression no ones a real bargain hunter/do there own work. a bit of time in the backyard goes a long way. old motors dont always have to be clapped out, a basic checkover and compression test will come up with the goods if its tidy or not. you make it seem like you will die when your motor konks out! but in my opionion thats when the adventure starts!

Not sure you'll be saying that when you're 10kms+ off shore?

I'm with the other guys here.  You might be able to get something "useable" for that price but you would need to do a bit of work on it I'm guessing and work usually costs money on boats.

I think most of us on here aren't suckers.  I know myself, I don't like being ripped off and won't jump at the first thing I see when shopping around for something.  But I am also a realist and wouldn't sell a $10k boat for $5k nor expect anyone else to.  But you never know so good luck to you.

As for what to look out for, I think at that price, you just need to get the best boat you can afford.  There are guys out there that will give your future purchase a good going over and give you a report on it.  Obviously that will cost you even more money but might be worth it.  Other members might be able to help you out with that?

Anyways - Good Luck with your hunting.

" you make it seem like you will die when your motor konks out! but in my opionion thats when the adventure starts!"

And thats fine - except what you dont realise is that weather conditions and the ocean can be very unforgiving and to that end i doubt that you would really want to put your life or those top blokes from sea rescue at risk.

There is a lot of experienced people on this forum and i think the message they are trying to convey is not that you wont get a bargain, more simply that some cheap/bargain boats will be cheap for a reason and your 5k outlay may soon turn to double that if the trailer, motor, steering, hull or a multitude of other variables go wrong.

If you are "handy" you will find help here on how to repair/maintain - if you are not it would be wise to go for a newer smaller boat (motor esp) that you are less likely to have issues with

I was going to bore you with my first boat - and what a bargain it was (on day one) as i paid 60% of the asking price - ....... two years later........ not so much!

Nice attitude there Jim. I've got an old bath tub and a broken whipper snipper you can have for half your budget ( whipper snipper has good compression.....), and you could spend the other half of your budget on either a sea rescue membership, or your own funeral, because with your mentality, you need either one of them.

At that budget, you don't choose brands or names. You choose what you can afford. You might still get a good tinny for that, but as with any boat, you will still need to keep spending on it to get it to where/what you want. So if your budget is $5k, aim to spend $4k or less on the hull and motor, and the remainder on equipment and servicing or repair.

Not just a river in Egypt hey Jim1.

Everyone one loves a bargaain, but with boating you really get what you pay for.

As for all the 'tinkering/compression testing' etc that you can do, weren't you the person recently who didn't know where the oil went in a two stroke outboard?

Seen This Before

Sun, 2011-07-10 20:53

An ole matey of mine got a bit jealous when I bought my Bonito 160 with a 60hp Yamaha 2Str for $12K a couple of years back.

Couple of months later (after staring at every busted piece of garbage on the verge) and despite suggestions it was just not quite right, he purchased himself a $5K 15ft with an old 70 2Str Jonno motor. "What a steal" he says its gonna be able to do everything I want and at half the cost.

3 trips in he finds the motor is running rich, chewing petrol and being a general sputtering heap. Takes it to a dealer who is selling a second hand motor to try and trade and the dealer refused to touch the boat, seeing as the fibreglass transom is rotten and distorted. The new coat of paint it got before it was purchased didn't quite hide that little issue it seems.

2 trips later he blows a hole out the side of the block you could fit your hand in. $1K later for an old Evinrude 150hp (yes, on a 15ft) that has been refurbished and he is back on the water. Motor of course is too heavy and in following swell basically sank the thing. Very funny.

After several more issues, solenoid, steering, you name it, sold it on for $4K, down a fair few thousand. Could have spent the $9K or $10K in the first place and got a half serviceable jobby first up.

Moral = B.O.A.T - Bet on another thousand.

Easy tiger.  People are just trying to help you out  through there own exprerieces, If you re read what people have written...you will see they are all for you getting into your first boat and out on the water. They are just trying to ensure you: A) Make it back to the ramp each time safely  B) Make sure you don't jeporadise any one elses safey and C)Save you some money in the long run by not purchasing a boat that will coast you 2 even three times what you paid for it in repair costs.

Hope you find a bargin and she is a beauty!

Mon, 2011-07-11 08:50

The Guardian 5.2 is at Yunderup Marine, which is my local, if you need any specifics looked at I tend to go past every few days around there. Wont be back till Friday in this case.

But from my view the Douglas 5.7 looks like a bit more of a goer value for cost - good multipurpose use too probably. Might not have to invest that much in it.

I'll tell you my little

Mon, 2011-07-11 18:19

I'll tell you my little story. It's quite embarrassing & taught me heaps.

I moved here from England 4yrs ago & "needed" a boat. I convinced the wife that this was "the right thing to do". She didnt seem to agree straight away, but after me sulking for a while, we decided we could afford $10,000.

I knew nothing about boats, nothing! I looked in all the usual places, dealers, Quokka, ebay. Went to view a few & realised that for that price I could get something that "looked great".

Sunday Times, quick scan of the classifieds, and there she was. Private sale, 17.5ft half cabin, 140hp outboard, offers around $11,000. Called the guy, went round there, could see it on the garden from a distance. WOW, that's the one, it looked awesome. Close up, still looked great. Started first turn, ran a treat.

I asked for a wet test, no probs. We went down the river. It ran great, performed well. Did a deal $9500. Winner!!

Wife happy, Dean happy. What a bargain!!

Week later we are in The Sound, fishing. back to the ramp, removed the bung & couldn't believe the amount of water that came out.

I riged up a bildge pump & float switch. Every time I went out it would work harder & more often. Eventually I thought I'd better take it to a professional. After a quick look he said "Jeez mate, you dont go out in the ocean do ya?" The hull was totaly shot, stress cracks & a hole that the previous owner had covered over. Yes I did go in the ocean, with my wife & young kids.

I was gutted. Shopped around & found a guy to do the hull repairs wich cost $5000. Got that done & it felt like a new boat.

On my 4th outing after having the hull refurb done, the old 140 Johnson on the back spat a bearing out, through the exhaust port which then went on to destroy the piston. Cost of replacement motor would have been another $10,000.

That boat caused some serious arguements between me & the mrs.

Now I'm not a young kid that's easily ripped off, but this bastard saw me coming from miles away.

So do your home work mate & listen to what us older, wiser people are trying to tell ya.

Dean

'On my 4th outing after having the hull refurb done, the old 140 Johnson on the back spat a bearing out, through the exhaust port which then went on to destroy the piston. Cost of replacement motor would have been another $10,000.'

It spat a bearing out through an exhaust port that then did a 180 and returned to destroy a piston? I didnt even know there were bearings on the top end of a two stroke.

Well to be honest

Back in 1988 I bought a 5m fiberglass half cab with a 65 hp johnson 2 stroke(1976) I never had a service and it never skipped a beat apart from a split fuel line under the engine cover after about 8 years, I paid 4k for it then and kept it for 12 years then sold it for 4.2k! same boat engine and trailer it was solid as rock.
