Hillarys Fishing Depth

Howdy,

So i Have managed to get on some fish off three mile lately off hillarys but im starting to figure out that maybe they are just in close due to spawning?

Anyway my question without giving spots is what depth should i be  looking at for fishing out of 3 mile?. I have been hitting 10m to approx 18m but i would like to know what depth would produce decent size Dhui and Snapper.

Once again thanks for your knowledge and advice. Again my boat is only small.

Cheers Harry

Hey mate

What size your boat? On a good day we used to have some good spots not far off Hilary's that can produce. Dhu and snapper can be caught in 5-10m etc but you gotta find the spot that produces more often than not, will try get you a couple shallow gps marks that should be worthwhile.

Cheers Pezdog,

My boat is a 4.2 runabout i have hit up a fair bit of 3 mile between hillarys and ocean reef on those shallows. im also wondering how far past three mile to get some bigger dhuis.

I have only caught 3 dhus. one wasnt even 35cm one was 50cm he went back and one @68cm which i kept. Getting heaps of sharks just wondering if there is better ground out further for on a nice day.

Cheers fir the replies everyone.

If you pass around the north

If you pass around the north side of Little Island on your way out to 3 mile you will notice a few decent lumps and bommies (most closer to LI than 3 mile). We have fished just drifted over these with success in the past. Being shallow and the lumps so small you can do a few drifts in 5 mins and move onto the next one of nothing is happening.

Burley is the key mate, youre in the right depth. I used to do well in 12-18m. I always took 2 blocks of mulies and cubed one whole block in a 4hr fishing sesh. Got plenty of dhues biggest 12kg. Like someone said previously, theres always spots fish will frequent more often.

Shallow or Deeper?

I own a large boat capable of going very wide which I only purchased less than a year ago. I'm new to Perth offshore fishing as I haven't grown up in this city. I've been out wide, in closer and inside the reef and I'm yet to land anything of decent size. The best I've caught is one just legal Dhui (and several under legal size), one legal baldi, a few queen snapper and nice King George and a few small black ass plus a lot of the usual crap like wrasse and bakers. Used bait, live bait and even jigs and so far the jig produced the legal Dhui last week. I have a good sounder and feel that I know how to use it but I still have no answers as to why I'm failing to catch anything of a good size quality and consistently come home empty handed. I sometimes wonder whether having a large boat makes any difference? One frustrated angler here! Haha!

I feel personally that starting out with a smaller boat limits your options and therefore forces you to think outside of the box, thus gaining more valuable experience than running around all day catching nothing if you had a bigger boat.

Shallow water fishing.

Agree with Hutch.  I regularly fish in water between 14-18 metres.  Best fish 20.5 kilo Dhu and 15.5 kilo Snapper with multiple fish above 10 kilo. .. snapper mostly.  At that depth I find fish are seasonal.  Love fishing the floater bait on 6 kilo.. the hits are super aggressive then hold on and show yr skill.  I anchor. ..burley. .  And fish different systems..  floater... paternost. Pick up good KGW.. Skippy etc plus the Dhuies and Snapper. ..shorter distance traveled. . more time fishing... lower fuel bills.

Interesting

Thanks for the info Perry. I've tried these methods albeit not at those depths and I really haven't spent a lot of time doing this. I've been wanting to try this again but with a more serious attitude towards it although I here that this is probably most suited to fishing in the dark as opposed to in broad daylight in the middle of the day. I'm looking at setting up some spot lights on the boat soon to be able to venture out in the dark (to avoid wrapping a rope around a cray pot rope). From what I hear the snapper aren't around during sun up times.
