Hobie-ing to Rottnest
Submitted by Hobie-Wan on Thu, 2009-07-16 14:16
Every time I'm out on the hobie around Perth, I look out at Rotto and wonder how hard such a trek would be. I have no doubt its probably not particularly daunting on a good day.... People kayak there all the time during the Rotto swim..
Which makes me wonder, have any of the mad yakkers here tried it? Maybe we can organise a kayak convoy over there.. Safety in numbers etc. Could even get a support boat....?

Rotto - just a warm up for
Rotto - just a warm up for an Abrolhos run
You'd have to surley do an overnighter aswell.
Easterly in the morning; seabreeze in the arvo - do-able. But like others, I'll stick to the Trophy.
Would definitely need a support boat to carry all the ale and dencorub!
Cheers Pete

Oh yeah, I would imagine you
Oh yeah, I would imagine you would have to spend a couple of days on the island to recover for the trip back :-)
I think you could do it without a sail, and leg-power alone, as long as the wind wasn't blowing against you.

There were a few that went
There were a few that went on the last rotto swim as you said. Some of the guys often do 15ks in a day or whatever so its not out of the question for sure.
Personally I want a boat following me that I could tie to when Id had enuff...lol

Rotto eh?
Few of the guys did it on the Rotto swim, and we do regular 20k round trips, wouldn't be too difficult.

Did it 4 years ago
Did it 4 years ago in a Hobie as a support for Rotto swim. Bit rough through the trench and around Philip Rock but enjoyed it in a strange way.

OK I'm convinced its totally
OK I'm convinced its totally do-able now. I just need to get a little more fit and wait for a good window of weather (could be a long wait).

i wouldnt try it
it would be hard for a large boat to see you and you might get run over by a large commercial or private vessel - i nearly got run over paddling my body board from thompsons bay to transits surf break wen i was 14 - theres heaps of boat traffic around rotto on a good day.

Safety Gear
Don't forget you would need to carry the correct safety Gear. ie Offshore Flare Kit and depending on where you leave from you may also need a EPIRB. I would also advise Water police or Local sea rescue via mobile phone when you leave and arrive at Rotto. We have had some Kayaks go missing btween Perth and Rotto and no one know where they are heading. Ended up being swept onto the wrong beach due to strong sea breeze.
