Holiday fishing

Hi All, first post on here for me. I live in the Uk and visit Perth at least once a year to see my daughter and family, i freshwater fish in the Uk and have done for most of my life mainly for predatory fish such as wels catfish, pike, zander and chub i have done some sea fishing in Australia but my experience is limited. Now I'm hoping to retire next year and spend a few months of the year in W.A. travelling around camping and fishing. Would just like some advise on where to start my journey, ive been down as far as Albany and Esperance but not been north yet. As far as the fishing goes id love to target sharks but i know I'd be better off getting abit more experience first so just going to fish for whatever comes along. Ill mostly be landbased fishing with the odd charter and may still have a dabble in a river or dam.Any help you can offer on locations, species to target, tackle and bait will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

Billy

Head north, Kalbarri, Quobba [just north of Carnarvon] and Exmouth offer some of the best land based fishing in Australia and the best time as far as weather conditions go is from April through to August

If you have access to a 4WD

If you have access to a 4WD and the essential 4WD recovery and safety equipment, consider steep point (shark bay).  It is very remote and you have to be completely self sufficient so it's not for the faint hearted or inexperienced!  Beach and rock fishing.  The latter being one of the best land based sports fishing locations in the world (along with quobba).  More info available at www.steeppoint.com.au

Thanks guys all looks great,if not a little daunting. Probably wont have access to a 4x4 plus i dont have any experience driving one. Maybe i mite be better starting a little closer to Perth initially then work my way up the coast . I was thinking of joining one of the fishing clubs in the area and getting some pointers there, good idea or not? Or do i just go for it?

I can't speak to the benefits of a fishing club because I have never been a member, but I am sure there are members on here who can give expert advice on that.

One of the beauties of the West Australian coast is that it is so long and therefore many great places accessible to both 4WD and 2WD.  There is also great little towns dotted all the way along the coast where you can fish off the beach, jetties and rock walls.

I have a great book, "Fishing Guide to Western Australia" (Blanksby / Prokop / Thipthorp). Ryan Thipthorp is a sponsor of this forum through his tackle shop, Oceanside Tackle.

It's a great guide to all fishing locations in WA.   Published by Australian Fishing Network www.afn.com.au
