sweet fish!
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

People do eat them...but there are much better fish to eat so I don't bother to eat them.

Keep 'em coming Ken!
I thoroughly enjoy your blogs...always interesting to read about the weird, wonderful, and not so well-known species and the methods used to catch them. Great read as always!

good read
the alligator gar are thick as around that area. I grew up outside of houston and we used to shoot them from a boat with bow and arrow attached to a string and reel . Was great fun. The big ones you would shoot and attach a float and track um back again and hit um again befpre could get them in . not the best on the chew though . some people make gar balls which is like a hush puppie with gar meat i side and then deep fried but not the best unless cooked properly

While we were fishing for the gar, there was another boat in the area searching for gars on the surface to shoot.
I've never eaten any gar. The fact that the roe is poisonous makes me a bit leary about eating them (in case I happened to puncture some roe and get the flesh contaminated). In my area, I usually catch them on the spawning run and that's the worst time to catch one and eat it.
