How to avoid the wrasse

Been catching far less whiting and much more wrasse lately. I use a burly cage with chook feed and fish in 5 - 30m of water, could the burly be the cause? They seem to be everywhere!

Wrasse are reef fish and will also hang around hard bottom with weed. Whiting are found more on the sand.

I found that off Little Island. The dirty sand just off the reef and weed holds the KGs and you only have to come in 5-10m and you get wrassed all morning

Sand whiting? If so no burly

Wed, 2017-10-18 19:26

Sand whiting? If so no burly and always drift... drop your line and if no bites within a minute when over sand move along. Keep doing that and you will find them, when you get ones in the 20~27cm size ping the spot as they tend to hang around in those areas. Kids and I normally get our 90 whiting within an hour in the 15m mark... always put a whiting on a live bait rig as smaller sharks love them!

 I've found the opposite.I

 I've found the opposite.

I was on a patch of lots of sand whiting, foul hooked a small one and it was going to die anyway, so cut it up for bait.

Had one hook with squid, the other had the whiting fillet, and only got hits on the squid hook after that.  Replaced the whiting fillet with squid and bang back to double hookups.

Just my experience.

If kgs I drift

Wed, 2017-10-18 21:47

Until I find kgs . Drop marker float with burley bomb on bottom. Then I still keep drifting close to marker float ,very sort drifts. Don’t want to drag them away from spot, 1 drop up ,go back. If your on anchor baits sit to still , which equals easy picking for shit fish. Sandy’s I just drift no burley. Each to there own do what works best for you. Good luck
