Experience

Personal ability and experience is the only thing that is comes down to. You don't want to be the fool on the news that attempted something that was way out of his capability and put the lives of others in danger when they had to put together a rescue attempt. I guess what I'm saying is that only you can answer that question.

First boat, only had it for a few months......be very careful with swell over 2 m and wind over 15 knots.

In other words, stay at home this weekend mate. Plenty of other better days to go out!! You only ge one life.

swell isn't really the problem if you're outside (not anchored over reef)

it's the sea that stuffs it up.

I think its more abou the seas than just the swell (unless fishing shallow reefs where large swell may break) as if it's a glass off with a 3m swell it's going to be fine on the water. When the wind comes into it with a swell it gets messy!

Never be the only boat out

Never be the only boat out there. Thats the golden rule.

you don't want to be out there when it`s shitty anyway fishing/boating supposed to be fun.

Never be the only boat out

Never be the only boat out there eh? I guess i see your point in you dont go out in bad weather by your self etc etc

doesnt really work for me.i like to get out early and be fishing my areas before other boats get to the same vincinity(i dont have to many offshore spots and just started exploring north of hillaries and ocean reef), or especially the fads, i dont like fishing them when theres 5 boats trolling past metres away from the fad! Its all comes down to experience, understanding the ocean and most of all log on and log off, and always tell some one where your days fishing is going to be (general area) that is staying on land (wife, missus mum etc etc)

Training in how to use your safety gear is crucial as well as your radio. If something does go wrong, stay calm, you will think things through alot clearer.

most of all and what i tell everyone when talking boat safety is RESPECT! respect the ocean and its seas and shell treat you just fine, may get couple of un called for winds and seas but if you respect and drive accorindingly to the conditions your in, you should be just fine.

Im not gonig to say anything about fuel. thats pretty self explanitory.

fish hard but stay safe that is the key
