Where are you leaving from? Could be Two Rocks,Mindari Ocean Reef , Hillarys, Gero, Rockingham, Bunbury or Busso, all have three mile reefs.

First thing
First step! buy a chart from the Department of transport site, think they are around 25 bucks. Have a good look and if uncertain to find a gap in the reef head north or launch from ocean reef and follow the leads out you'll be sweet.
But first thing! if you dont have a chart plotter best to buy a chart

yea ok cool
well you could leave from ocean reef ifs is the actual three mile reef (where it breaks) if your GPS is a chart plotter (has the actual chart on the screen) running out from ocean reef marina towards the south west there should be a solid straight dark line, thats the lead line for deeper draught vessels to head in or out from the marina, the line will take you clear of any underwater obstructions till your out into 20m depth. Heading out from ocean reef to the breakers you've got no real danger till you get to the reef itself and u just need to skirt around it, but if your unsure follow the leads till your behind the reef and approach from the west and your on a winner.
If going from hillarys there is a decent gap pretty much due west of hillarys that even the ferries use wen they go whale watching, head through there and motor north behind the marmion reefs. dont have my navionics card at home otherwise i could put up a pic for ya but its pretty noticeable on the chart

Theres only one decent gap in
Theres only one decent gap in the reef which is directly out from hillaries boat harber but, its only safe to go through on a small swell, anything over 2.5m's and theres a risk of having a wave break there. The rotto fairy and charter boats ect all go through this gap when its safe. The gaps about 100m's wide but stick to the middle and ull be fine, mark the trail on ur plotter and come back through the same way.

On your chart, if you draw a line WSW from the lighthouse you will see a clear gap in the Marmion Reef, the water dpeth on the chart is 6.6m, go through here.

Good Idea to do a basic nav
Good Idea to do a basic nav course like I did. It will really put you in the picture regarding reading nav charts and a bit of manual navigation. Plotters just make your job easier but you need to know how to read them as well.
