a wood lathe is the easiest
a wood lathe is the easiest (but most expensive way)
what wood are you using ? i think the hard part would be in getting the wieght and balance right.
could actually be fun to try tho using a block of bulsa if you could find some thick enough .. anyone else know of some usable woods ?? guess pine is too heavy ?

I have made a few poppers in
I have made a few poppers in the past and actually it's not that difficult. Though the poppers that I have made are those for GT popping not the little ones for bream and whiting.
Turning the shape you want on the lathe is pretty simple and after that find yourself a really long drill to drill through from the front and back so you can put your stainless steel wire through.
As for the concave face i used to use a lathe with a chuck so i just clamp the wood in place and use a really large drill bit (38mm) and drill it up to just where the taper of the dril finishes (probably about 10mm or so) and i drill the through hole for the Stainless Steel wire at the same time. After that is done i use a die grinder with a suitable bit (a large round bit, usually i use grinding stone as i find that easier to control and not take too much material off)to slowly take off just enough material to get the cup face I want.
After that it's just sanding and painting before installing the weight at the back and heavy duty swivel and you're done.
Oh ya i have tried a few kinds of wood from all sorts of different scraps, to pine to various hardwoods. I think Pine is the best or should i say easiest to work with.
Hope this helps.

with an owner crane swivel,
with an owner crane swivel, think i used 330lb, just drill a hole in the popper and thread the stainless bar/wire through it. (just make sure the swivel eye goes through the wire before hand.)

Hi Ya,Had a go at aking
Hi Ya,
Had a go at making some a year or three ago. Used 25 or 30mm jarrah dowel to get the weight needed to cast them. Certainly not as fancy as Shark Bait's as I simply cut the dowel at a 45 egree angle to ensure the splash.
Seems to throw a bit of water around but wouldn't be as good as a cupped face.
Cheers.
