How much leader?

Hi Guys
Today l just bought some Black Magic 40lb supple trace leader and spooled up my brand new daiwa legalis 5000 spin reel with 30lb Daiwa j-braid? My first question is how much leader do l use for casting out stickbaits l have heard that you should have enough so when you are casting your finger is on the mono leader as the braid can fray up from your finger rubbing on the braid is that true or should l just use 30 or 40cm of leader so my leader knot is not running through the guides? Next question how many wraps on the FG knot should l use when connecting 30lb braid to 40lb black magic leader?
Thanks

I like to run my leaders just to the reel, plenty enough to keep you going when tting knots and re-rigging. I go 20-25 wraps with the fg at that size line

You’ve got more chance of
You’ve got more chance of your finger fraying due to the braid than the other way round, depends on the weights your casting and your guides. On my heavier surf gear I’m running 80lb leader over a 30lb mono main line and that makes a fairly chunky knot

I use about 6ft usually if casting slices or stickbaits. I like to have my finger on the braid, a couple of inches down from the mono, when casting. However on a couple of my rods, the tip guides are quite narrow and don't like even an FG knot going through, so for those I use a leader the length of the drop I have when casting so it sits a little bit past the tip. I'd use 22-26 wraps for that.

Leader length = 1.5 times
Leader length = 1.5 times length of your rod
gives enough to cast and have one or two winds on the reel to save your finger tip.

90 percent of my fishing is casting small poppers and stickbaits on 30lb braid. I use 60lb leader about 600mm with a back to back uni knot. Knot is outside the guides when casting. I see no reason for a long leader or special knots and I go hard on most fish which are usually spangos and trevally. You can fire out long casts all day with no fuckups. I fish with some pretty good fishos and there special knots and long leaders and have a good laugh at the amount of fuckups they have. It only takes a minute to tie a new leader on as well. When fishing for gts on heavy gear I will go all out on leader and knots.

I like a few wraps of mono
I like a few wraps of mono on the reel, like ChrisG. Attached with a FG knot. Casting for a few hours seems to be much more comfortable with mono underfinger, and the few wraps around the spool give some leway to tie on different lures without running short
