Condolences to family
condolences to all families , we are camped just north of Leeman and the wind and seas got up early in the morning so would not have been a pleasant day out there. , well done to all sea rescue and assisting people, could only wish for a better outcome.

Leeman
Thank you for being respectful. I lost my Brother in Leeman at Easter. I can not go into details here of what happened, but as alluded to, we did get a cray pot rope around the propeller and while trying to free it we took a large wave over the stern and the boat capsized.
While the boat was upside down I attempted to get to the EPIRB which was located inside the wheelhouse, starboard side at the top, which when inverted made it the most inaccessable location possible. It was inside the clear rear cover. I could see the EPIRB but could not reach it. So I would ask you all to think of where your EPIRB is located and relocate it so you can reach it if the vessel is upside down.

Condolences on your sad loss
You have made myself and a few others think about just where we stow or EPIRBS, most of us think about just where is a good place to keep them out of the weather and not how are we going to retrieve them when needed.
Thank you for your raising this important point.

Condolences again.
It's really good of you to let people know what a lot of us have been wondering. I think it would take a good breath hold to get at mine if capsized...

Condolences mate, just shows
Condolences mate, just shows how quick things can happen. I carry a grab bag with mine in and an old one strapped to the boat.

And the other thing guys is that when you are in the water and its rough, taking a big breath before you duck dive down to get your EPIRB is almost impossible because of the waves breaking over your head. I think a float free EPIRB, transom mounted, maybe, is what I will go for in future. It will certainly be my most important decision on my next boat.

I try to keep a PLB in my pocket at all times when I'm out on the boat. That way even if I can't reach the EPIRB I can still trigger the PLB.
