how to remove old cowling stickers on outboard
Submitted by pelagicyachts on Tue, 2012-10-02 10:05
unfortunately this is not a tutorial but rather a question!
I am buying a few parts for the yam out of the US at the moment (anodes/water seperator a few other bits an pieces) and want to replace the front cowling sticker as the "clear" or see through part of the sticker has gone yellowish and cracked (looks pretty ordinary)
does anyone know how to get the old stickers off without damaging the paint underneath? - dont think acetone would be a good idea, the surface is curved slightly so razor blade not ideal.... attached a pic -not sure if its clear to see.....
If all too hard i wont bother -just seeing if anyone has done this before with success!
cheers

Hey mate, try bunnings, they have a spray for sticker removal. Its got something to do with citrus, smells like oranges. Spray it on wait a bit and even those real hard stickers peel off, after you get rid of the sticker just keep spraying the residue and wipe with a rag works a treat!

OOMPH Goo & Stain remover
OOMPH Goo & Stain remover ( Bunnings ) yeah citrus based works quite well...should easily do the business from the cowling...but still there's sticker residue thats maybe 20 plus years old on the boat that just won't lift...citrus seems to be the secret ingredient in good hand cleaners as well.

If the decal is still intact
If the decal is still intact heating it with a hair dryer will enable you to peel it off and use above mentioned products or tar and bug remover to remove adhesive. Otherwise if the decal is that old its hard and cracked the products may be the only resort to softening the lot.
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

The citrus stuff the other
The citrus stuff the other blokes are referring to is probably "Solvit"
It's awesome for that sort of job.
Use the hair dryer first (slowly) to remove the top layer and follow up with Solvit to get rid of the residual glue (and any of the sticker that doesn't come off)
Be patient, no matter how hard the sticker is it will eventually soften.

You could even get hold of a plastic razor blade. We use them in the car industry all the time.

WD40!
If you manage to get the sticker off yet the residue remains, WD40 works a treat for removing it. Done it on race cars for yonks and hasn't ruined the finish of the surface either!

If all else fail
A Medical dressing/glue remover I always use is Z-Off. This stuff melts all sticker and adhesive glues I have come across.

Septone make a product
Septone make a product called wax and grease remover and it works a treat you can get it from any super cheap etc... Simply keep the sticker soaked for a while and it will peel right off once you get a corner up. Panel and paint shops have used it for years.
