lambs heart soaked in oil

Mon, 2010-07-19 06:22

found the best bait i have ever used for whiting is diced up lambs heart (about 1cm cubes) and soak them in a tuna or whale oil (when you used to get it)

I think I'd rather catch a few less whiting than use whale oil soaked lamb hearts...

The gulp worms do work but about half as well as squid tentacles or thin strips. Either spec on the tip or threaded with a bit of tentacle swinging free depending on the whiting size. Bloodworms are supposed to work well (only used once but they worked). The good thing with whiting is if you find a patch there's usually heaps there so you can put 3 diff baits on 3 hooks and see which works best.

Good day on 5fathom

Mon, 2010-07-19 08:49

Went out from Woodies for a fish around 5 fathom.

Found some good ground for next time and did ok with the fish.

2 Sambos, heaps of big skippy, a 'mystery' cod looking fish (ill post pics later to see if someone can ID it), 5 undersize pinkies and the usual small stuff.

All on bait, had a troll for about 90mins or so but didnt get any takes.

Hooked onto one unstoppable on my heavy rod, pinged 50lb braid and the thing didnt seem to be trying.  Snapped where the braid connected to the swivel (which ran down to wire trace) so thinking perhaps ill need to switch my knots up.  Was first trip out with that rod/reel/line, so going to do some testing on the line at home and see whether there are any issues with that.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.
