Huggy and Daz do Harvey Dam

After a gentle ribbing from Daz (DazSamFishing) in another post, I made the offer to take him down to Harvey to see how we would go with the trout and marron and to show him that I can (and do) actually catch fish despite not posting pics.

We picked Sunday hoping it would be a bit quieter, but hadn't planned on the blisteringly hot weather. The trout were definitley not interested, but luckily the redfin hurled themselves at our lures one after the other after the other!

Didn't really catch anything worth bragging about in the redfin category, some we caught were barely bigger than the little scorpion 38's we were trolling!! In the end we caught about 15 redfin and dropped maybe another 5 - 10? The best hit we had all day was nearing the end of the day when it had cooled off a little - Daz's outfit got hit and this fish took drag from his Stradic 5000 with a fairly taught drag setting - hallelujah I thought, we are finally going to bring a trout to the boat. But then the line went limp and the dream was over. In the end, we never boated a trout, but I bet that dropped fish is still haunting Daz (I know it's still annoying me!).

With the sun setting, we then layed our chook pellets out and had a few beers waiting for the baits to do their job. We then started our rounds, checking the baits. First run, we got to the first bait and just as we shone the torch down, ping off it shot. Not a big one, but its shocked Daz at how quickly it took off. He was expecting it to be a bit easier and the marron to be somewhat more lethargic in their escape efforts! Tongue out We checked a few more baits only to have yet another small ones shoot off as we were walking up to the bait. Encouraging I thought, at least they are about. We then did our second run and I had a very small mnarron sitting on one of our close baits, got the noose in position, edged him back beautifully, but due to its tiny size I wasn't quick enough to get the noose shut on it. Disappointed but happy that at least the marron were around - or so it seemed. That was it, last marron we saw for another 2 hours of checking baits. Bit of a let down with the early indications of them being around, so we jumped in the boat and motored around to the ramp and called it a night.

Highlights: crabs I caught the day before for lunch, Little Creatures Rogers we consumed while trolling, daz getting his first redfin.

Lowlights: lack of trout and marron, pinjarra bakery was shut so we couldn't get any carrot cake.

It's true - Huggyb knows how to fish! Tongue out

Good report Huggy - it was certainly one of the most relaxing fishing days I've had in a long time.

A simple day out slow trolling lures & drinking beer in sweltering heat... can't beat it.

was that second redfin the biggest you got or did you get bigger because thats not a bad size for redfin up ut harvey... Ive seen bigger there but the average is somewhere in beetween the first fish and the second one.

Eat them?

Thu, 2010-01-28 14:59

You probably did so well on the reddies because you were using lures similar to baby trout... Top one is a brown trout and bottom is similar to a rainbow trout and harvey is stocked with trout so that's probably why you got so many redfin.

Andy he is probably holding another beer behind his back to keep the number of bottles in the pic limited Laughing

Is an electric motor

Sat, 2010-01-30 14:54

a necessity at harvey dam huggy? I was thinking of having a crack in the bathtub, but I dont have an electic motor.

Haha we use our leccy up

Sat, 2010-01-30 15:02

Haha we use our leccy up there. You can cover more ground that way and once you locate a school you just head over that area a couple of times and wait for the strike.

There has been a change of law now and you are not meant to have leccy motors on wellinton dam.... Not sure about harvey but i dont think the harvey dam was included. Well at least i hope not because these two places are our main reasons for having the electric motor.

And now that you mention it i can see the trail left by the motor behind you so theres evidence that your driving haha.

Harvey Dam is electric

Sat, 2010-01-30 18:57

Harvey Dam is electric outboard or paddles only. No fuel powered motor allowed.

have done the paddling thing

Sun, 2010-01-31 08:44

but prefer the motor - consistent troll speed (not pulsing along), quieter, easier.

When it was 1am and I had to paddle back to the ramp and it took my about an hour, I decided then and there that was the last trip paddling with oars in a tinny!

Fair enough

Sun, 2010-01-31 08:57

Theres another item to add to the list:D The bathtub paddles like shit with its blunt nose so I wouldnt even bother until I got it sorted.

When they say no petrol motor, does that mean completely off the boat? eg could I have a bow mounted or aux mounted electric motor, and have the petrol engine up out of the water?

Sounds pretty awkward to me, Might have to just borrow the olds dinghy if/when I get an electric.

you can have the motor attached

Sun, 2010-01-31 09:11

but if you can remove the fuel tank, do so. If you cant, then disconnect the fuel line.

Outboards

Sun, 2010-01-31 16:23

Speaking of electric engines only i was actually at the dam lastnite hoping to have a last chance marron but only to catch 2 guys motoring around in a petrol outboard dingy!! Flew past right on nightfall creating decent waves and stirring up the mud ruining everyones nite marroning along the particular bank there.

So being in a 4x4 i followed close to shore and lit them up light daylight with the spotties to let them know, consequently they werent seen after that. Bloody moron's like that ruining it for everyone else!

End of rant haha.

Sun, 2010-01-31 19:10

They probably thought you were the ranger or something haha well done. If you go out the back of wellington dam on the collie side there are plenty of boats with outboard on.

We went camping there one weekend and for the whole weekend people were waterskiing on the dam!!! Knee boards, biscuits, you name i,t they had it. I assume it is people like that that are also to blame for the marron traps that youu find tied to tree stumps in the middle of the dam...
