Hydraulic line popped off helm

Loaded the boat to go fishing yesterday, drive to ramp.  Launched.  Left jetty.  Turned helm to head away from jetty. And....

Pop!

Blew a hydraulic line off the back of the helm.

End of fishing day before we were out of the marina.

The hose has come out of the brass screw on fitting so i think it is just an easy fix.  Has been used many hours with no issue so i need to investigate why, perhaps some vibration has loosened it just enough to pop it.  Perhaps the locktite never binded properly.

My question is, to those who have installed fixed these things, is do i need a new brass ring thingie that goes on the hose (is it a crimp) that tightens up inside the nut?

Commonly referred to as an olive

At least for plumbing purposes. They can be re-used, particularly if on plastic lines. If on hard lines, such as copper, it is usually best to replace to avoid leaks or weeps as they have been compressed hard to get the original seal. When you tighten them on a plastic line, such as your hydraulic line, they do not get as compressed. best would probably be to replace it, but not essential,  IMO. That is, if you have just removed the threaded fitting with it all intact--just screw it back on.

BUT, if the line just blew out of the fitting, leaving the nut still screwed on and the rose inside it, it could mean that it either wasn't screwed up hard enough in the first place, or that rose really does need replacing.

I didn’t replace the ring when the same thing happened to me, it will be quite atight fit over the hose though. The trick when putting it back is to push the hose all the way into the fitting, then pull it back about 2mm, before you tighten it up. Then the bleeding process....

It’s calked an olive fitting, and can’t be reused.

The brass o ring is designed to squash/compress over the nylon line. Once it’s been compressed, you will never get it back on the line.

Youll need to chop the end off as little as possible, match up a new olive fitting, and put it back on and tighten it all back up.

scotto is on the money, probably didn’t tighten it enough in the first place for it to pop out.

Clean down with a rag ,then use a small tooth brush from your tool kit and a bit of solvent or acetone(just to clean the thread)on the collar.
Do not over tighten and always use two spanners.
