hypathical?? undersize

if you were to catch a fish that is just oversize, if you take a photo on a brag mat with date and time, then later on fisheries says its undersize, you then show them the photo, would they listen to reason, need to dock it for identity, interesting to know the law or peoples opinions

It's a bit of a tough call as We all love to hang a bit of shit on the shrinking blackass from time to time, but a mate of mine caught his first dhuie and it went 53 cm on the fisheries measuring sticker, so into the icebox it went. About an hour later he put it on his brag mat for a pic and it only measured 50 cm, so to be sure I pulled out my lufkin tape measure and it only went 49. At the time there were stories going around how pedantic fisheries were being with the interpretations of crayfish laws so I made the call and made him dump it as I didn't want him to get slugged with a 200 buck fine as trying to argue with a fisheries officer is like arguing with a brick wall. Felt like crap doing it, but the fisheries sticker was out by 40 mm which is a shitload in tradies terms

Yep,

Sat, 2015-05-09 20:24

we tested this last week with a small mixed demersal bag. All fish on ice for at least 3hrs up to 6hrs

58cm Dhuie shrunk to 52cm.

45cm Blackass shrunk to 41cm.

62cm Pinky stayed the same.

54cm Harly also stayed the same.

Interesting to see this difference.

Interesting results Matt. I'm quite surprised at some of the shrinkage amounts . 6cm on a small dhuie could make all the difference and a fine back at the ramp.
I also didn't realise how far out of wack those sticker can be. I've had 1 to 2cm but 40mm is not a small amount and again could really get you in trouble.

Always a difficult  thing to argue either way as they can only go with what you have in possession.

Proof it was that fish could be difficult.

as per this link photos distort the true length.

I screenshotted a official letter from fisheries withdrawing the fine after someone took it to court.

Fisheries stickers...

Sat, 2015-05-09 12:02

...all have "guide only" printed on them, so they, brag mats, professionally calibrated measuring devices/etc don't mean jacksh#t when it comes to verifying the catch.

Only one that matters is whatever fisheries are using to measure the fish....although obviously you'd be in a position to take it to court if your device was proven to be spot on.

Brag mats

Sat, 2015-05-09 14:12

Brag mats are notorious for being wrong. Here is an interesting thread http://fishwrecked.com/forum/shimano-brag-mat-measurements
And I think there were some more pictures comparing them on another thread.
As said above, all fisheries stickers and guide books state they are only a guide and cannot be used as defence in court.
I place the sticker onto a flat piece of aluminium or stainless steel with a folded lip at the front. Then use a quality steel rule to line the sticker properly. I actually increase it by a few mm . ie , I set the 50cm mark at 50.5cm .
Even then shrinkage to the fish can occur in the esky.

Sat, 2015-05-09 15:05

Personally I try not to take just size fish....like dhu for instance I'll try and release anything under 600

cause a size dhu has barley any flesh compared to a 600..But say it doesn't release or its stuffed I'll take it.. but if it swims away healthy hopefully it will get another few years to grow

If you can get a 30cm fillet

Sat, 2015-05-09 16:25

If you can get a 30cm fillet off the fish then just do it that way, so long as you are confident it was size to begin with.

Yes I have found that once filleted

and then put on ice the shrinkage is quite significant.. As much as 5 cm as Scottnofish has mentioned..

I'd rather throw a fish back

Sat, 2015-05-09 21:42

I'd rather throw a fish back and not get anymore on the day than take the risk.

I've had days fishing for snapper and thrown back 55cm fish hoping to get bigger, only to not get any bigger at all. doesn't worry me.

For fish that you are going

Sun, 2015-05-10 12:00

For fish that you are going to keep just increase minimum length by 10% to cover shrinkage. As some people are commenting, you don't get a decent fillet off a just size fish and when it shrinks you get even less

I always carry a roll up dress makers tape, more accurate than the stickers and brag mats, plus it rolls up and takes up no room.

Adhesive labels will stretch

Mon, 2015-05-11 09:18

"Guide only" would be related to the fact you can stretch those labels as you apply them. I've got a couple loose at home, ' I'll do the exercise tomorrow and place a steel tape alongside for reference. Kicking my heels in Gero today while they are fitting a new cover to the boats' canopy.

And left in the heat or sun the stickers will shrink. I ran a tape over mine that had been sitting on the boat for a few weeks before applying them...... the sticker had shrunk 30mm in length.

Crab gauge

Mon, 2015-05-11 11:30

I bought a crab gauge a few months ago as I had lent all mine out.
Got it home and thought I would check it before heading out. Put the vernier on it and it was 125.5mm .
I used a file and opened it up to 128mm just to be sure. You just cant trust any of these devices or fish rulers unless you check them. I could have put crabs in a bucket thinking they were just size only to get busted .
