Shimano Brag Mat Measurements

I was just sent this from a member who bought a Shimano Brag mat yesterday from BCF.  Check out the measurements, a word of caution for anyone looking to measure fish.

Remember to check against a fisheries ruler as they are what the fisheries department will measure your fish against.

Nope dont even rely on a new, or old tattered stuck on esky lid fisheries sticker. They 'Are a guide only'. As you have in the picture get a good metal ruler or tape measure. Or just take fish alot bigger than the minimum :)

Fork

I tend to measure from the tips of the tail instead of the fork for the safety margin but when you get something with a paddle tail you would be in deep poop using that mat.

Just what I was thinking

Sun, 2012-12-23 15:53

Undersized fish are one thing, but thinking you have reached the peak of the mountain with a metery Barra after years of trying only to find it was probably 97 or so is another! Take that framed photo off that wall!

I'd doubt it. The onus is on you the fisher to ensure the length is correct.

 Actually Adam, as mentioned

Actually Adam, as mentioned above the fisheries stickers are only a 'guide' too.

Fisheries use metal rulers attached to solid boards for measuring fish. Nose of fish goes up against a block at the start of the board, and tail is allowed to flop 'naturally' onto the board to get a measurment.

Sun, 2012-12-23 23:24

Well you dont know if every brag mat is out. Some could be over, some could be under, some could be spot on. Same with any measuring device. Obviously a metal tape measure/rulers would have the highest chance of being accurate.
Alternatively you could just have everyone use a brag mate so everyone would be out or have the same chance of being out together. In saying that my brothers Shimano Brag mat reads under ie. A 1m fish would read 98cm.

But as fisho ron said its not an offical record board with prizes or prestige. Its just for a bit of fun and really any photo could be doctored to make a fish look bigger against any form of measuring device. Some people are using fisheries stickers that could be out, or brag matts that could be too. But the same could be said that any ruler or tape measure could be out.

Its all just for fun in the end. If you want a real record and the prestige join a club and get it weighed on certified scales i reckon.

 Just measured the store

Mon, 2012-12-24 11:27

Just measured the store ones. straight out of the packet, yes, it is out by 6mm. If you stretch the mat to full length without any bumps in it, its the exact length.

Fisheries WA sticker

Mon, 2012-12-24 14:08

Well you boys have us all checking things now ! My 2008 Fisheries WA sticker is spot on, so one can safely assume they have used a correct measuring standard when sending out the stickers. Good that means my 103cm mulloway yesterday is all above board and legal.
