Identifying rod - Butterworth?

Hi guys,

New member here from the northern suburbs of Perth. Into land based fishing. Been reading a lot but now's the time to start posting!

I've just 'inherited' a couple of old surf rods from my Dad. First is a Butterworth Powerrods Bronte, a 7168 noodle of a thing. Guides are in good nick - just needs a rebind. I might rebind it use it as a set line rod.

But to the subject...the other rod is a similar era and Dad reckons he bought it around the same time, but has no idea what it is - can't remember.

It's a two piece, same mustard colour as a lot of the Butterworths, with chromed brass joining ferrules and chrome reel seat, low mount and with a wooden first handle, like a sand spike but not tapered. This handle is messed around, though, and could have looked like anything when new.

The grip above the seat is cork.

It has a metal stripper half way, for an Alvey, and the common orange & white Fuji guides.

Thing is, is the size. The only markings left on it are S* 6138, and what remains of the second letter looks like an 'S' (not a U). The font looks similar to the marking on the Bronte.

So I'm guessing it's a 6 wrap 138" (11 1/2 foot) 2 piece Butterworth surf spin rod. But I can't find any evidence of such a beast.

Anyone heard of one?

Cheers

Stuey

Stu, that was/is an SS6138 (Surf Spin 6 wrap 138"). Probably the most popular surf rod of its day. Also made by Butterworth in Brisbane. The SS taper is faster than an SU, much lighter in the tip despite being theoretically only one less wrap of glass. I'm struggling to remember the series name that went with it - might have been Fingal. Brontes were all low (Alvey) mount from memory.

G'day Hal,

Perfect! Thanks - that sounds like it. It does feel like quite a nice rod, lighter in the tip than I expected. Needs a bit of work though, but I love restoring old gear, even if a new rod for the same price would be better. I've rebuilt the matching cedar Alvey 650/C3 as well - bought the new drag washers through your Mindarie store.

Incidentally, I must thank you...one of your staff in Mindarie called you not long ago to ask about a deal on a rod, which you agreed to. I do buy a fair bit of gear there.

I'd searched the internet high and low for 'ss6138' and 'Butterworth', but nothing.

Cheers

Good to hear. I must have the Bronte / Fingal thing mixed up - maybe Brontes were the SU7... series and Fingals were the SS6... series - something like that. There was an SS6156 made too, that was popular as a long 2-4oz rod.

Thanks
