Improving Fishwrecked
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Thu, 2017-01-19 10:36
Hi Gang,
To keep the site moving forward in 2017, I'd like to hear of ways that we can improve fishwrecked.com. I'm all for trying to change stuff (within reason) to make the site better so happy to hear your thoughts.
If you don't wish to post publically, please send me a PM or email to;
Cheers,
Adam

The only thing I notice is when you click on a thread link it opens in the same window therefore you have to click the back arrow or open a new tab to return to FW rather than the thread link opening in a new window . Only a 1% er it’s pretty good as it is .

not sure who but
fish report fortnightly along the coast where they are biting , whitings to demersal , as well as crayfish movement what youd expect to catch & what depth ,would attract interest .

Search results
When searching if the results were displayed as a full page exactly like what you see if you click on the "latest content" tab with forum topic, author, total comments, date etc
The current side bar that shows search results has very little info. I normally search the Fishwrecked site via google.
An easy to use search tab should help reduce the same shit being asked over and over too.
apart from that all good

Improve reliability of the
Improve reliability of the PM system - I reckon more than 50% of messages disappear. I now make a copy of the message and check sent items as to whether it went or not. Then I just have to paste it into a new one if needed. Look at the amount of times in threads someone says they didn't get the PM to see it is affecting loads of people.

Its massively time consuming Andy. The amount of emails i get saying its too hard to get through the registration process on a daily basis is hard work.
I have to leave some of it in your guys hands to weed out if they are legit.
For example, the cv spam chick nina from yesterday says she's a UWA person studying medicine which is why she was approved. Its painful!!

Duly noted. Happens to me too on forum threads. Not sure why. I have enquired today about an upgrade of the site from drupal 6 to 8 which should fix this, make the site mobile compatible, make it easy to put images in threads and im looking at the other ideas raised to see if it can do it.
Main thing is if the site can do the migration which is what we are looking at so am going to try test the water first to see how hard and costly it will be.

Good ideas
Some very good ideas being shared!
In regards to fishing reports, I read John Curtis's fishing reports weekly because it covers alot of our waters, from inshore to the fads. I can ask John if I can copy and paste the reports on FW on a weekly basis (similiar to Ledge64's funny fridays). That's if Adam gives the green light! Haha
With the monthly photocomps, it's great that we see awesome fish being caught. However, most of them are large deepwater species. Not every member has the privilage of a large boat to go deep drop. What I woud love to see is some variation to the comps which allow all members to participate, whether they're landbased or have a boat or a 10 year old member who loves fishing! Maybe set the comps in categories? Eg: April photo comp can be any fish caught in the Swan etc.

Prize
There has been an Oceanside or Compleat voucher for winner and runner up for last few years. I write on the comp every month for the winner and runner up to contact me to collect, which they usually do.
This comp will be changing going forward though re prizes, has not been decided yet.
Like the idea of different comps, i can look at that based upon what has been submitted.

I put it here chris because there are probably others who are in the same boat. I use fishwrecked heaps and thoroughly enjoy the site. This was one thing that I feel may turn off new members or hesitant posters of pics.
While I'm on it another area of improvement chris is perhaps not putting your 2c in on something that doesn't concern you champ

Buy and sell posts do not appear in latest content, only in the latest buy and sell area. Anything which is put in the wrong area is removed to keep latest content free of buy sell material.

Idea
I do like this idea, really depends on the input it gets. I will see if there is any drupal module capable of doing it.
Edit: Looks possible, just need modding. Currently the site is in drupal 6 which has been ended, so will need a full site upgrade, which im considering.

A "floating" back button to
A "floating" back button to the forum page to look at a new post. When its one off those large "Popcorn" post, or randallDF's/Jackfrost's during footy season (;-)) you have to scroll all the way back up. Yes you can use the back button, but unless I am missing something as a computer NON nerd this takes me back to the original unread pages.
Would it be possible to number new post to a section. If there is a comment up responding to the post higher up in the thread (for example what I joked with Andy above) looking up new comments go there first, and you might have to scroll down the whole lot to get to the bottom.
But as a almost 10 yr member, seeing many come and go I overall think it is fine the way it is, and thank you Adam for keeping it going and improving it all the time.

Another thought so we can all
Another thought so we can all learn. Without getting into legal issues a page to advise why someone gets "booted" from the site. Some are obvious but others we don't find out about. Ie something like a "broken ethics" page. Adam you are busy we all know - perhaps advise who the Moderators are so we can bother others not just you. AND make it more obvious especially to newbies who donators are, because sure not everyone can afford to assist you, but IMO if we can and we enjoy this, and it is made more obvious I think more would assist. Its about time I sent you some more!

A minor one but with threads
A minor one but with threads that go over multiple pages having an option to click on a page number which appears just under the thread heading like in other forums. Currently you need to click into the thread and then scroll all the way down before you can go to the next page. Minor, but helpful. Also the little 'new' post markers don't appear because you have already opened the thread on page one so when you get to page two you don't know what was already there and what is new.

develop an app
mobile phone app would be great as it would save having to zoom in.
a format similar to those on social media that is easy to access content that also learns what you like to view the most but still be able to access all content. there are plenty of topics that you could just give a thumbs up or down without leaving comments.
targetted promotions to what you mostly follow - for example if i am searching jigging then your sponsors advertisments are the first items that pop up. i think this would entice more suppliers and also get more of their stuff sold.
uploading video straight to the pages, similar to instagram that is capped at 1 minute, or something.

I tried a delete function in the early days, but people used it to change the context of conversations by removing posts mid thread. Then the whole conversation would be without the source of the point people were discussing. Turned out to be easier to moderate the double ups.

Thats what i mean, if you allow the poster to delete their own post, they post something, change their minds after a dozen other people comment and delete their posts and the whole thread context changes. No delete option makes people think twice before posting (generally speaking)

We have started work in the back ground on moving the site from drupal 6 to drupal 8 which should help the image problems and give some other options. We are determining how easy / hard it will be and whats involved and how long it will take, shouldnt be any site issues, but if there are, please feel free to email me;

Worthy causes section?
Just throwing it out there but a worthy causes section where maybe people a bit down on their luck can contact site admin and verify their bonafides then maybe site can call for trusted members to take said worthy causes out on fishing trip etc much like make a wish foundation but for kids and/ or parents that maybe never get chance to go boat fishing or pick up some tips from some of the crusty old salts on here that know what they are doing?
I often think here am on a nice boat doing what I love... maybe I should share with those less fortunate?
Or even try and reach out to some of our newest australians? One of the things that has impressed me with this site is the anonymous generosity of boaties happy to help someone theyve never met with offers of taking out on their boats for sea trial or just a fish.
I remember thats what west aussies used to be renowned for worldwide. Now everyone is so afraid of each other things are getting out of hand.
Not for everyone i know.
As I said.. just a thought.

Very worthy cause
Mate, I totally agree with you and the worthy cause you've mentioned. When my boat restoration is completed (soon!), I will be more than happy to take fellow members out for a fish, especially those who cannot afford a boat or those that have young kids that want to have a nice day out on the water.

Upgrade
Its happening. Currently we are learning how to port the 60 modules for the site from Drupal 6 into Drupal 8. Some of the challenges;
The ad module has not been developed in drupal 8, only drupal 7. The ads pay for the sites hosting, upgrades and time to manage a 50gig database.
All the nodes are a different format in drupal 8. Everytime you create new content it creates a node. So the new content is assigned a number ie node/95152 that is not how they've done it in Drupal 8 so we need to develop a way so that all previous content created on the site will transfer accross and be readable.
With the node issue also comes latest content, because that is pulled together using a custom feature, it is not supported in D8, so will need to be developed.
So far we have created another server for the site, have copied the shell of the site across and are trying to upgrade and see what breaks and what doesn't. Unfortunately its not a 5 minute or $5 fix for improving the site, but will give a hell of a lot more options for us to implement new modules that developers have put together. The one thing that does appear in D8 is that it should make forums with images, images into comments and images from phones a hell of a lot easier to do, because in the old models of drupal its next to impossible unless you want to spend the time uploading to a photo host and linking across.
Cheers,
Adam

Just doing my bit
Haha. Just doing my little bit for our WA fishing fraternity.
Many years ago, before I bought my first boat, I would spend hours on the banks of the Swan with a rod in hand and watching all the boats and tinnies that go by, thinking when I would be lucky enough to be able to spend time on a boat... So, I know how it feels to be on the shore and watching boats...wishing to be on one!

Being able to post a pic in an existing thread
Not of your own creation. Would be very useful when people are seeking assistance, say, in the boating or electronics sections. Also as someone else said, have subsequent pages accessible at the top of the page, save scrolling all the way down. I understand why photo sizes are limited, but even phones are commonly outputting 4mb pics these days. I'm having to crop all the time to get them in. I'd start a gallery of my own, but would need to do so much resizing.

Yes
Well aware of the image issues, its the critical change i want. The upgrade is delayed by atleast 6 months at this stage. The critical module that effectively runs the site hasnt been ported yet, so would require coding which is way outside my budget. Hopefully some one else does it sooner rather than later.

Took a few tries.
apart from disabling rich text, I had to copy the HTML link rather than the Photo Only link, which I would normally use to post in the more commonly used forum formats. I've been a Smugmug user for a long time, maybe 15 years, looked at Photbucket and could just not take to it. Pages looked horrible, storage options limited. "Free" sevices are all well and good, but you are paying for them , one way or another.

Hey Adam ive got one,
Hey Adam ive got one, embeding videos from either youtube or facebook or from where-ever you can get an embed code for the video. You used to be able to do it from youtube using the < youtube# > tags but it doesnt seem to work anymore. I just pasted an embed code from facebook in my post and clicked preview and in the editing box the video comes up but in the actual preview for the comment it is blank. Hopefully you can work something out to help!
