Info sharing: FURUNO FCV 295 or FCV 587
Submitted by ShipSterns on Mon, 2014-05-26 21:02
I would like to hear some feedback from any trailer boat fisherman that uses a FCV 295 or FCV 587
I am in the process of making a decision which unit to go for at the right co$t.
I am getting into doing some drop lining In water depth 300m to 800m.
I have a 6.0m custom built cuddy cab plate alloy with an OB.
I intend to use a transom transducer ( TM 260 model 1kw 50/200Hz)
I have herd some forums saying it is a waste of $$$$ Going for the FCV 295 on a trailer boat ??
Any feedback on this would help.

FCV 295
Cheers Reece
info I found looked a bit old, just seeing for any new views on these units.
I believe the TM 1 kW 260 (50/200hz) has not been around that long?

Furuno 295
Bourneo,
chasing blue eye off east coast Tas.
using 600lb mono instead of rope drop, 200lb snoods , can fish up to 30 hooks
Old sounder struggled once it got over 300m so now need a good step up in quality electronics.
not commercial amerture only
using a pot hauler with a adaption reel that screws onto the capstan head
1000m of 600lb on the reel

Interesting regs in Tassie Matt
Check this out. Five hooks per line and you can use set lines with up to 30 hooks. The real interesting bit is that you can basically combine 4 set lines together making it 120 hooks if you have 4 people with licences onboard. The following is from their regs:
"Rod and Line
You can use any number of lines with up to five hooks, so long as you are within 20 m of the gear, or the lines are attached to the boat from which you are fishing.
Set Lines
A set line is an unattended line, either a dropline (see larger dropline image) or a longline (see larger longline image), with up to 30 hooks. A licence is required to use this gear and area restrictions apply. A person may only use one set line at a time. In waters more than 150 metres deep, you can join your set line to the lines of up to 3 other people on your boat, provided no person uses more than 30 hooks or more than a total of 120 hooks are used. Not more than 4 set lines are permitted on a boat and each person must be present when the line is set and retrieved."
There is an on water possession limit of 5 blue eye per person which would suggest to me that if you were to pull a full string of blue eye on a 30 hook setline you would need a minimum of 6 persons on the boat otherwise you are in deep dudu.

Yet another example of how tight and rediculous our regs are

I had both side by side
The difference in bottom/fish discrimination is very noticable as the 295 has more features. Many more. But thats what your paying for.

NOHA ,
The old saying you get what you pay for, hope it's OK for a trailer boat and I make the right choice of transducer

As the others have said, if
As the others have said, if your wanting it for deep dropping the 295 is the only way. Ive got the 295 in my 6.5m rig and the 587 in my 4.9m rig, although the small boat isnt for deep dropping the difference in detail between the two is huge even in sub 80m. The trannies are transom mounted and out deep work fine when its flat, you still cant go above 5kn tho.

cheers, good information to know
speed on the trailer boats is usually an issue for a decent reading on the sounder.

295 is amazing. I run a 260 transducer but not transom mount. Can't go faster than 8 on before I lose bottom but probably due to where it's mounted
its a BIG screen and it's the front is splash proof - the back not

I believe the 295 is hard wired not plug and go ? Is this a problem for security in a trailer boat for you?
What depth do you fish at with you're 295?
Any feedback for depth over 300m

Iv got a 38hz 2kw on a drop
Iv got a 38hz 2kw on a drop down pole! Picked up fish on a edge from 460-510m at 8knts. You will see fish around 35 with a 585 an tm 260 but going very slow if not stopped

FCV 295 / Transducer pic porn
Reece
I was checking out your pics of your transducer set up looks very neat
the 38hz 2 kW looks bulky on a trailer boat compared to a 260 dual transducer
I relies it's the amount of surface area on the face of these transducers which give far superior images
Do you drop the pole only when on location ? does it still work OK in the up position when just cruising around
having a bit of a look?
Your pics show some good readings for that depth with your unit.
does it use much extra battery power running the larger transducer?
you are painting a clearer picture for the type/ depth/ of fishing and sounder I am chasing My gut feeling is I think I will be disappointed if I go the FCV 587
cheers

1 kw on 295 still reads at
1 kw on 295 still reads at 4500 which is deepest I ve had it
but u need to go SLOW
it takes a while for the signal to bounce back
I would have liked a 2kw but had to stop spending $$ somewhere otherwise I would have had a 3kw ducer
the 295 is just better for deep setup with a few more functions IMHO

Deep drop
Shark1
i can see a pattern starting to fall into place now from all the feed backs now!
needed is the FCV 295 + and at least a 2 kW transducer .
Furuno are suggesting a 2kW transducer "82B-35R"to suit the 295 if you want to pick up fish at any depths over 500m

Mate, with a 6m ali boat, I
Mate, with a 6m ali boat, I doubt you will be fishing in 500 m too often unless you are vey keen (yep, there are guys who are VERY keen.....).
A 6m ali is light and will drift fast and move around a lot, making life hard in the deep. Going from 250m to 350m is a big step....500m is a big deal.
Still, better to buy once and buy right, so if you have the coin, go the 295 and 2kW.
I have a 7.5m heavy glass boat with a 587 and 1 kW SS264. In reality, this setup is perfectly OK for 250m and jut OK for 350m and can read to 500m in good conditions but you need to squint......
If I had plenty of coin, it would be 1150 and 38 kHz for deep and 600 W 744 for shallow......you will hate the narrow beam 200 kW 1 and kW transducers in less than 50 m where most of us fish,
Boston Whaler 235 Conquest......getting the flogging it was built for.

2 kW is big ass
I have a FCV 295 with through hull 1kW SS264 50kHz and 200kHz pair. I don't think the 2kW will suit your boat, as they are either in hull beaming through the hull (which won't work in aluminium)or through hull with a fairing (which tends to steer small boats. I went through this discovery phase when I bought mine for my 7.5m plate alloy bot. As to the comment about hard wiring. Yes, this is the case, but I have wired a short lead onto the back of the 295 with a plug, and the matching socket on the dash so I can remove it if required.
