Interesting contraption

I was watching old mate down at Challenger Beach this morning with a set up consisting of a few bits of 50mm conduit glued together, a secure chamber he pumped up to around 70psi and a cannon outlet elevated to about 55 degrees. Once pumped up, he'd drop his gear into it and release the pressure to shoot his bait out. Was only getting out about as far as most could cast due to there only being about 40% of line on his reel, but with a full reel of some kind of braid would have given him a heap more distance. Got to admire the effort though.

My boss went out and bought a bait cannon, they are crazy things. You freeze your bait and rig into a mould and slide it in they shoot a mile. Although the only time his used it was when we tested it at work. My god the thing is lethal saves hurting your casting arm. Just more shit you gotta lug up and down the beach.

You'd want a long shock leader (maybe coilded on the ground) if you were planning on using braid, otherwise the sudden impulse of the shot would likely ping the line.

When we used to run around

Sun, 2017-01-15 14:11

When we used to run around as young teenage mongrels locking the locks on the outside of caravans and pulling the power plugs( if they had vico plates ), rocking roofs etc it was also about then we were shown how to make orange cannon. Much the same as the bait launcher really. With cheap black and gold hair spray an oven lighter and the perfect orange you could launch and orange virtually straight up out of sight...

Beware people, these are deemed an unregistered firearm...

Sounds like the spud guns we use to make. One of our mates thought he was clever and wrapped a sheet of corrugated tin around his guts and told us to shot him at point blank range. Dropped him like a bag of shit. One off those times where you've never laughed so hard for hours.

Bait cannon

Sun, 2017-01-15 17:40

Short length of suitable diameter poly pipe, quick opening lever valve, small fire extinguisher bottle, push bike pump with pressure gauge, shrader valve mounted into extinguisher bottle.
Cost $40 all up, will launch mulie and sinker out of sight (I have snapped of 300 metres of line at the spool).

No bang, low signature sound all packs up into back pack chair I carry when beach fishing.

Min assembly (only screw barrel to valve) and bobs your uncle.

This guy today was pumping into sealed section of conduit via shrader valve, was using a 12 volt tyre pump. He reckoned it would be good for 120psi but only used 70. Frightened the shit out of everyone when it went off.

I'd be very interested to know what alarmed people.
Any way just had a quick look at utube, drones they are the fishermen's friend of the future by a long shot.

Seen a bloke using a very slick set up at seabird to launch his baits hell far out. Looked and worked awesome.

Just be careful where you use it as i have heard that some police would class it as a catagory E firearm as a "line thrower", sub cat E3

Or failing that they might try say it is sub cat E6

Which is any other firearm which isn't stated in any other catagory. :-/ How they usually classify Spud Guns.

Not sure how much that is open to interpretation.

As it is also a 'bait thower'?

 Getting baits out to the

Mon, 2017-01-16 06:58

Getting baits out to the horizon is usually over rated beach fishing anyway...

Most fish work the tides and feed in the gutters close to the shore...

The best way to catch big mulloway is to walk out as far as you can, turn 180 deg then cast back at the beach...
