Intermittent tell tale

Went out on Geographe Bay on Saturday - motor started fine so i let it warm up then zoomed out about a kilometre and a half to find the tell tale pouring out lots of steam but no water. I let the motor cool for half an hour and fired it up - tell tale worked fine for the rest of the day. Got home and the same problem when i tried to flush it in a half 200 litre poly drum. I could feel a stream of warm air coming out of it but no water. Finally got it to pump ok by fitting ear muffs to the inlet IN the drum of water. It has never pumped through just with ear muffs hence the drum. I have searched older posts and can't decide between an air lock or buggered water pump - the water pump will see me marooned as i can't afford any pro repairs for a while. Evinrude Elan 35hp 3 cylinder 2 stroke.

Cheers, Ian

Usually the tell tale blocks with something where it comes out. A thick 150lb leader material gently threaded down has often cleared gunk from the tell tale, but your blockage sounds more serious, like a buggered pump.

water pump

i would guess that the impellor is on the way out , if it has not been used for a while the rubber fins on the impellor could have fused the side wall of the pump housing and then freed up later but doesnt have much pressure due to the fact the impellor fins are worn down or you may have a blockage in the leg

id suggest you have a salt blockage

have seen it before with identical symptoms.

probably have to remove the head and exhaust cover plate and clean out your water passages, its not too big a job on a 2 stroke.

I have also used a 20mm syringe and a piece of a "scalp vein needle" tubing, thread it into the opening of the telltale and flush it backwards. Just ask your friendly local doc like Dr Tony Best down your way to provide the equipment and this sometimes undoes the blockage if it is grot or salt.

Tell Tale - Thanks everyone

after this i am leaning towards the impellor being worn after sticking to the housing because it has sat too long. Is this a D.I.Y. possible job? Motor is an 1986 from memory - but low hours.

G'day Ian. Personally from

G'day Ian. Personally from experience it sounds as though the impellor has packed it in. Mine did the same thing though in reverse. Travelled about 17nm north of Kalbarri with no problems. Went to move to another spot another 3nm north and as I was nearing my destination smelt a strong hot smell. Turned around and steam was pouring out of the tell tale. ended up swimming to shore and luckily ran in to a couple of mates fishing up there. Not good fun at all. Impellors are very easy to replace for a handy type of person and they are relatively cheap - $30-40.

Hope this helps

Mick
