International Fishing line specs confusion!
This is something that is currently driving me nuts - Trying to buy some J-Braid 80lb here in Australia at the moment as its on runout in prep for their new J-Braid Grand but unfortunately its out of stock everywhere so decided to look in the UK and WOW things get confusing! Australian J-Braid Specs are-
J-BRAID CHARTREUSE PE8 - 38kg/80lb / 0.43mm
Ok great, thats what ill look for.. but only if it could be so easy! Euro specs for 79lb (yeah 79??)
PE6 - 37kg/79lb / 0.35mm
Almost 0.1mm smaller?? really? So ok lets look at the next weight up 103lb
PE8 - 46.5kg/103lb / 0.42mm
Whoa.. So the 103lb is 0.01mm thinner that the australian 80lb??
I just have no idea what all this means! Surely its the same line from the same damn factory.....
Anyone have any thoughts of whats going on? All I want is some damn 80lb line!

It's a problem with braid
Actually a couple of problems...
First, there are no agreed standards on how to rate braid.
Second, unlike mono line, manufacturers have extreme difficulty in producing braid that breaks consistently at a given rating.
Unless you plan on using it for game fishing where you have to conform to GFAA/IGFA rules, then I wouldn't worry about it. Buy whatever is closest to what you think you need.
