Is it mandatory to carry a release weight?

I thought I saw this someplace, but it doesn't say anything about it on the fisheries web site. Anyone able to elaborate on this?
Cheers
Dale

I think so
If you are fishing for demersals?
I'm certainly not carrying one to go fishing in Cockburn Sound, there is simply no need for it.

Possession of a “release weight” will be required when fishing from a boat in the West Coast Bioregion
Doesnt say exclusions for different depths etc. their cheap, they dont take up much room, just carry one to keep them happy.

A comment on release weights
If you haven't got one yet I suggest you look at the heavier ones. The 40oz one I purchased wasn't heavy enough to get a 25ish kg sambo down. I succeeded in the end but very frustrating. My 40oz model now weighs 76oz.

it needs to be in a useable state
as well. You cant just have one in the cab it must be on a handline or rod.Or you must be able to easily attach it to your rig you are using.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

Mmm, shoulda known about
Doh, shoulda known about this when I dropped in to pick up my Epirb from Honsu yesterday. Will a brick with a barbless hook tied to a 100m of rope suffice?

What about an anchor?
If you're drifting for demersals it's going to be just sitting there in the well anyway. Simply attach some line and a barbless 12/0 to it...if Fisheries pulls you up you might get away with it!

The fisherys were in full
The fisherys were in full force this morning at the Cockburn ramps no doubt checking release weights amonst other things,,with only one customer at the ramp and 1/2 dozen trailers in the carpark it will not be the toughest day for them,,,
