It was personal
Hi Crew,
Me and my mate (member cuthbad) decided to try kayak fishing. And last friday we went to the beach to give it a first solid go. I got some nice fisheads from the shop and we were at our spot about 6.30pm. We had a quick go with the yak and then put out our first baits. As we r new to this kind of fishing I used a light modified sliding rig. About 30 min later we had bouth our baits out and started the waiting game.
After just another 30min my reel started to make this much loved klicking sound
I said to my mate already?! I was not prepared for such a quick pick up and i couln't quite belive it. I lifted my rod out of the rodholder and I started to tighten the drag and there it was gone....... I left the bait out for another while and after I got it back in I found out that it took my whole rig and cut through my shockleader!
Now i knew that a light modified sliding rig isn't cutting it.
Two nights later I went back but this time with a sliding rig as my mate was on shift and I couldn't take the yak. I put it out with a nice new fishhead and 2 hours later I got a solid pick up. I take the rod in my hand tighten the drag and.......gone......... This time I got a lil annoyed. The next night I went back, again by myself, and out went another head. This time it was just 30 min and I had another pick up. This time I actually got him on. For about 30 seconds, then I could feel the abraison happening and ping it was gone........ again........ really annoyed
Now it was personal, I put out another bait but no more pick up's in this night.
By now it is wednesday and cuthbad had a night of and could join me again. We decided to use the yak and much bigger baits and longer steel traces. We went down and put out some nice baits. This time and for my first time I used a circle hook rig.
30min later my reel starts klicking. I take the rod in my hand and slowly tighten the drag ( not to strike is so hard if it is in your nature to do) . The line starts to get tight and I give it a gentle strike ( cuthbad is reminding me not to go to hard, thankfully) and it was on!!!!! My first reaction was to yell I got you mother...
Then I had to calm down because it was not landed yet. After about 30 to 40 min of fight I could see the fins breacking the surface. And cuthbad helped me to get the fish on the beach ( still with the gills in the waterline). Cuthbad was yelling its a tiger!!!!!! In this moment I was over the moon! As a tiger is my aim to catch for about 2 years now. We tried to take the hook out and the circle was right in the corner of the mouth. This sold me for the use of circle hooks and I will use these hooks in future and no more J hooks.
After the hook business we took some pics and released the shark unharmed back in the sea.
The hooking ,landing and handling of the fish worked awesome and it couln't have been any better. I got my fish and it swam of unharmed!!!!!
And a big thanks to cuthbad, fishing for big sharks is a team sport and I couln't land a fish like that on my own. And now it is his turn!
What a day and what a fish!!!!!
Cheers Seb

Congrats!
Well done! All the ingredients of a winning recipe - persistance, open-minded, good gear, good bait and the ocean with it's toothy inhabitants. Did you hook him on the yak and paddled to the shore or paddled the baits out?
Nice one on the release (now you can hook him couple of years from now and flex muscle again)

I must be getting old. The thought of taking a yak out with those critters cruising around make me shiver LOL.

Line capacity
Hi Mate , that is just a question of line capacity. But the rule of thump is as far as you can. If possible in the 500m range.
