yep agree , the other penaltys are too soft , when they can result in someones death

pissy /drug driving , take the car and 6 months inside
theft ........bigger fines and mandatory gaol

sms or texting while driving , take the phone and car for a month min .... way too many doing this at lights and while driving , bloody scary imo how quick that little distraction sms ing can lead to serious shite on the roads

any crimes inside a home or on the person ......again mandatory sentence inside ......

peeps dont like it , dont break the law ,,, simple really
amazing how fisheries penaltys have become so severe, but all the others are being rail roaded by pc do gooders to be weakened even more

All this talk of bagging out is depressing

Mon, 2016-12-12 14:58

Are we the only ones struggling?  Our stats for this season say we have been out 20 times thus far and average a little over 4 crays per trip and that is with 3 licenses onboard.  Having said that despite it being slow for us it is nice to have some crays in the freezer with sufficient for Xmas.

This is our first season and only out of a 4m tinny so we didn't expect much but we have caught over 120 which is about 100 more than I thought we would catch. The beauty of low expectations.

It's been an enjoyable season so far despite the two weeks of pulling empty pots at 4:30am and the outboard dropping a cylinder as we arrived at the first pot one morning leading to a 45 minute trip back to the marina while calling the boss to explain why I would be late to first job.

Cray Run

Mon, 2016-12-12 19:32

Mindarie has been a week year, I dive and every spot i go to I compare with previous years, this year every spot had less crays - a lot less crays.

At Mindarie it looks like they have all run now with just straglers and dwindlers around, even the back of the strip was empty yesterday.

That's an interesting comment

Mon, 2016-12-12 19:53

The skipper of the boat I was fortunate enough to join has passed much the same comment.  On the occasions he has dived he was of the view there were many more crays about last year.

 there have been plenty of

Tue, 2016-12-13 08:41

there have been plenty of crays this year, thing is, people seem to pot the same places they did last year. Simple rule in the whites, if your not getting them, move.

We have a rule that if the pot does not have a minimum of 4 in it, it gets moved. Yes, we have not got the 20's per pot we saw a few timeslast year but that is due more to the number of pots out there i believe. Also there were more pro boats working this year than last so a few must of still had quota left.

Even at the start of the season on the inside edges there were 3 times the amount of pots on the edges we fished last year, so we were only getting 4 or 5 a pot for 8-10-12 etc. So we didnt hang around we moved, keep moving until you find the crays.

We have superceeded our catch from last year this year and have not missed our bag for 2 weeks.

Will be pulling the pots out this week but there will be crays around in good numbers well into the new year.

Spoke with a guy at the ramp today who got his first bag today (he's struggled on the same spots as last year) and they got 10 in a pot in 8m of water well inside the 3 mile. so there are still heaps.

Couple things to remember in the whites

Dont pot on the reef or weed MUST be on the sand, if your on the weed you will get stuff all. If your pot comes up with weed your on the weed.

Dont overbait, we use 1 hokie head a pot and throw the 2nd head out every 2nd day (so there is always 1 head in each bait container)

move around if numbers are low

Dont be afraid to try where there are NO pots. the last 3 pots i pulled of our 4 today had 10, 10 and 8 and those 3 pots were 25m apart but no one else potting this area.

Any particular reason for not "over baiting"?

dont need it, its a waste and you attract everything else under the sea.

I only use 1 hokie head, shift them about if numbers are low. Gotta remember not every ledge or edge will hold crays, often in the whites they will sit in the weed edges too

ohh and i also have 2 pots

Tue, 2016-12-13 08:40

ohh and i also have 2 pots which are only single bait pots which are smaller than the double bait pots (these are my two) they have caught as much if not more than the double baiters of my deckies, so pot size does not make a difference. my single Jarrah pot had 10 today.

good to see your getting afew

Tue, 2016-12-13 10:11

good to see your getting afew ,

as bodie says , set em on sand , spread em out and keep moving around if your not doing too well , we always move any pot that doesnt catch well ,

im amazed at how many posts iv read that blokes are pottign right on top of each other , sometimes it may be unavoidable .but if i have any choice ill move mine away from others , even on a good spot that has fired well in years gone by

better to have a pot by itself in good ground than share with others imo ,your pot has the potential to catch all around , or not at all

given how you see crays when diving , there can be lumps, ledges or edges loaded with nests of them , but swim 50 metres away and its no where near as loaded or even empty ..... you need to move to find them nests , thats why you get some pots chockers and others not .....

prospect your ground and work it , mine cover several km each season
