on my travels today i picked up some circle hooks, made up a few rigs and keen to give them a go, question is what hook do you prefer. circle or tarpon?

go the circle
After my mate had hooks removed from his hand i ended up rigging and baiting for him for a few days. He had a pretty discusted look and protested when i put the circle hooks on his line. We immediately had about a 70% reduction on lost gear and landed just as many pinks and baldies as on J hooks, since then we are both converted when fishing heavily snaggy ground for demersals. Apperently you do not strike on a circle, but habits are hard to break and they hooked themselves regaurdless.

No strike.
I switched to circles on bait including King George a long time ago. Purely from a avoiding gut hook point of view. Just don't strike.

Circle hooks
Thanks Poida and Cam - I think I just learned what I've been doing wrong... I have had zip success with circles - must be because I always strike...
Never caught a darn thing with a circle hook - so I figured they were not a good investment...
So... do tell me... when do you pull the line then...? Do you wait till they pull it?

The secret is to wait until some load
comes on. At this time you pull against the load by winding the reel rather than striking with the rod. When it comes up solid it's game on as per normal.

Thanks Alan
I'll give them another try next time I'm out...
Pity about the weather this weekend - hoped for something good...

Good luck with them
A few other tips. When using circles don't clog the hook up with bait. For the hook to work as it is designed to the gap between the shank of the hook and the point needs to be clear. If you are putting the circle hooks on a dropper loop, the loop should enter the eye of the hook from the point side rather than the 'backside'.
I recommend Tainawa hooks, they are great, very strong and not expensive either. They are only small but I've seen dhuies in the 20kg range taken on them as well as solid rankins and reds.
