Jerry can for fuel tank?

Does anybody know if you are allowed to use a plastic jerry can as a fuel tank?

With a little modification of the pouring cap (drill a hole in it) and add a strainer/weight to the end of the fuel line to keep it at the bottom and a stopper so it doesn't get pulled out of the tank and you have a $30.00 fuel tank.

It sits better in my boat with a retaining strap and doesn't take up a huge amount of floor space.

I already carry a small 10ltr one for emergencies.

Any thoughts?

IMO sounds lie a recipe for disaster!

they are always popping up on gumtree, 90 bucks new from whitworths -biggest issue with the jerry can is that it will have no expansion space (raised) so doesnt matter where you put your breather its going to push fuel out when full

The plastic fuel containers all have a 5-10-20 or 25 litre level marked on them which is the level you fill to, the rest of the space is expansion space.
However this post has to be a joke! "Fire Man Stan" , dammed if I would risk it. The consequences of injury, litigation etc.
If you cant afford the correct gear, don't own a boat.

Sorry did I upset you in some way iana?

What is with the comment " If you cant afford the correct gear, don't own a boat." all about?

I was aiming at is a fuel tank with a smaller footprint so I don't loose valuable deck space. So far all the portable fuel tanks I have seen are low in profile with a large footprint assuming so that they don't tip over essentially spilling fuel. Hence consideration of using a jerry can.

If I can't get anything off the shelf I will look at custom made.

It appears that jerry cans or empty chemical drums are appropriate to be used on long haul trips, up to eight on board! You should check out that discussion iana

So how do you extend your journey if your fuel tank dosn't have the capacity.

Anyway thanks to the other guys for your comments.
