Jighead weights when bottom bouncing
Hi all
When we've been fishing lately out from The Cut, we've been bottom bouncing baits in around 40 - 45m of water and we've been using the standard paternoster rig with a sinker weight between 7 - 10oz. I'd like to try some soft plastics but I'm wondering whether I need to buy 7 - 10oz jigheads. I know it's reasonable to expect to use the same jighead weight as a normal sinker weight, but I can't ever remember seeing any jigheads this heavy in the local tackle stores in Mandurah.
Have I just flat out missed seeing them or do the rules change when fishing with SP???
I did try a soft plastic threaded onto a 3/0 hook and attached it to one of the paternoster hook loops and although it didn't catch anything, I thought the idea was sound.
Your comments greatly appreciated, thanks.

7-10oz in 40-45m? Faaar out.
7-10oz in 40-45m? Faaar out. Each to their own though.
Just to give you an idea... I use 1-2oz jig heads for soft plastics in 40-45m. Even when jigging, I don't use any weights in excess of 100g.
When I used to do bottom bouncing out of my home ground in QLD, we'd use 5-10oz leads in 60+ meters of water.
Try to down size & you might just increase your success rate.

i use 6 ounce in 40m, works
i use 6 ounce in 40m, works perfect, could even go a bit lighter. with placcies, 2oz would be sufficient

yeah, if the drift isn't to
yeah, if the drift isn't to bad use a 2oz.
If the drift is running a bit quicker use a 3oz jighead. What type of plastics do you use? how do you jig them? sounds like your putting the plastic on your 3/0 hook on your paternoster rig even with ur sinker?

Rusty we just recently fished
Rusty we just recently fished in 47 mtrs and had success with the 6" McArthy rigged to a Nitro elevator head.
I removed the standard hook and replaced it with a Gamakatsu 7/0 O'Shaughnessy.
The nitro heads come in 2 & 4 oz. As the wind dropped i found the 2oz was more than enough, although the Dhuie was landed on the 4oz, as the current and wind were playing up early on.

Drift can be quite fast
We usually have the sea anchor out to slow down the drift and we change sinkers (on our paternoster) as necessary, to keep the baits directly below the boat....that's what I've been told to do, anyway. If the sinker is too light, we find the line at a 45' angle to the boat and that's when we go heavier....is this the normal rule of thumb??
When I attached a SP to a 3/0 and attached it to the paternoster rig, there wasn't a jighead attached to the hook, just the SP on the hook and the hook attached to the loop in the rig. The sinker would have been the one that we had chosen to suit the conditions, as above.

In that depth i havent really
In that depth i havent really used heavier than 2 ounce. Just cast out the back and drift into it? I use the TT jigheads and the nitros when deeper in 3 and 4 oz but as 'Man Overboard' said change the hooks on the nitro there too small for 6 and 7 inch placcies. I bought the size 7 nitro hooks and then added a small split ring so the hook is up the right way.

Jig Head Guide
Jig heads, we use the TT 1oz to 1 1/2 oz for 30-40m.
Jig heads, we use the TT 1 1/2 oz to 2oz for 40-45m or faster drifts.
Jig heads, we use Nitro & TT 2 oz to 4oz for 45-60m or faster drifts.
Tip, cast back behind the boat so by the time the SP sinks to the bottom its beneath your boat and start working it. Small lift & twitch with your rod tip which aggrevates the fish and periodically freespooling back to the bottom. Gently gently is better with SP's and your enticing the fish to bite so dont take it out of the strike zone too quickly.

i agree the elevator jig
i agree the elevator jig heads work good, but remember to keep some bait in the water at all time to keep the fish enticed.

sometimes fish like bait,
sometimes fish like bait, sometimes they like placcys and when they both dont work it dosent hurt to put a bay jig down.
next time your out and not getting anything try changing your methods, sometimes it pays off
