John Dory

Has any one caught a John Dory near Perth? I have heard they only take live bait which I rarely use,so maybe thats why I've never caught one. Or do they not live round this part of the world?

Have seen them caught in Busselton. There was one dude that was cleaning 2 on the jetty that he had caught using live yellow tail. Talking about 10 years ago.

saw a load of small ones

Wed, 2012-04-25 18:49

saw a load of small ones floating in the slick stream behind a trawler along with hundreds of dead whiting, skippy etc on the way to rottnest a few weeks back.  biggest fish kill i'd seen in a while and it was man made....hope it was a split net because if it was just excess waste from the nets it was pretty poor.

Sure about that??

In a nutshell, no comercial fishing between mandurah and lancelin has been allowed for a good few years.

Definately no trawlers.

Busso Jetty

Wed, 2012-04-25 19:25

Many years ago my older brother & I were fishing at the first head ( just past the old join point of the two jetties) He had a live yellowtail out for a bonito on a 30lb hand line  the line was well out from the jetty or a least looked to be because the wind was blowing pretty hard west south west. What neither of hd realised was that the yellowtail had swum back toward/under the jetty. When he went to check the line he pulled it in and out from the jetty emerged a John Dory of  5 and a half pound. Were we stoked - oh yeah!!!!! The best fine tasting firm flesh I've eaten and I;ve had Dhuie, Pink Snapper, KGW, Baldchin, Coral Trout. If you could catch them with some regularity they'd be right up their on anyone's list of must eat fish!

Thanks everyone who replied. I'm not any closer to catching one but at least I know they are around; albiet in small numbers it seems. I have only eaten resteraunt or shop bought frozen - all I think from the East. The taste is sensational.

Get quite a few of them out wide in Geographe bay off Quindalup through to Bunker bay on the rubbly type bottom. Top eating fish.

scotto, wouldn't say if i didn't see it.

Was a couple of weeks back headed out first thing from hillaries.  Fog what thick as buggery and only saw him when he was around 250m in front.  Waved me down to let me know he had nets out behind so slowed down.  Once he passed we contined and thats when we saw the kill.......we drove along it for about 200 metres (me and another vessel) and had the mrs scoop a load of whiting with the net.  Fish kill kept going off into the distance but continued onto rottnest.  Pretty poor to see in metro water imo.
