Johnson outboard concern

Hi all FWers,

As you all know, I have a 150hp 2st Johnson. Lately, I have found putting into reverse will cause it to make a rather loud clicking noise and the engine seems to be jumping backwards as this happens. What do others think, adjustment necessary of the gear cable or something more sinister. Thanks in lieu.

Thanks Dodgy,

I thought as much but wasn't sure. I will have to get it sorted by Waterline Marine. Have the Rottnest Convoy coming up and want to make it is up to scratch.

Hi there.....if the cable adjustment does not work you will need to adjust the driveshaft.......it can be made longer/shorter.......you need to know what length the shaft should be though. I sold mine a while back with the workshop manual so I do not have the info but I am sure tyou will be able to find it somewhere....

First off, let me say to all those that made the effort to respond, thankyou. I did take it to Waterline Marine and Cameron sorted the problem. It was the cable needing adjustment, thankyou Dodgy, but what has made me a bit annoyed was when Cameron told me that the cable was at  the end of its adjustment, and that I would have to get new ones for next time. What annoyed me was, those cables were put on by All Boats less than twelve months ago, and they were to replace the other ones I had bought from All Boats less than two months before that.

Do I feel ripped off or what? Anyway, you live and learn as my Grandmother used to say.

Now Metro, as to its fuel economy, or lack there of, it cruises at 23knots doing 1.4km/l. If I remember, that equated to around 28 lt/hr. I am fortunate that Nico suggested getting the 150 in the first place as it worked out to be way overpowered for the boat thus the engine is not worked very hard. Plus she runs a four blade 14.5x17 prop compared to the original 15x17 three blade. I was also told by Cameron (Waterline Marine) that she probably has only 300hrs on her even though she is nearly 20 years old. I have made Rotto to Hillarys on 17lts of fuel and I only run XD30 oil in her.
