Kalbari...... up up and away!

Heading north to Kalbarri..... hows it looking??
Thu, 2009-09-24 22:38

Hi Guys,

We are heading up the coast Fri-Mon for long weekend..... I've dragged away the hubby and am in some deperate need of a good catch. Beach wise, anyone know of any hot spots?? The weather looks to be good--- help me put a smile on the old boys dial!! Any suggestions. We have fully equipt 4x4 and reasonable rigs.. Chasing my dream mulloway, but settle for anything good eating!! Also have a kayak if its worth a paddle out anywhere??

Cheers. :)

Half your luck, Kalbarri is a great place

Fri, 2009-09-25 08:03

You might find it will be fairly crowded with the school's finishing up today.
Chinamans at the mouth of the river still seems to be getting some action.
Wittecara Beach is worth a try for tailor and mulloway.
The blue holes are a great spot for throwing out poppers or unweighted mulies for some good tailor action at this time of the year.
I would definately try paddling the yak up to somewhere like Goat Island in the river for some good bream fishing.

PM me if you want some more details on some spots.

Blue holes is a marine sanctuary isnt it? Maybe theres a few spots with the same name or you just fish near, but not in it?

You are right and wrong Matt

Part of the Blue Holes is now a sanctuary, but the best fishing spots there fall outside the sanctuary zone.

Many thanks

Fri, 2009-09-25 09:19

Hey thanks guys,

I'm so excited. We went up in Feb but did a deep sea charter and some exploring mainly. Landed a spanish mack and 2 pinkies.

This time just try beach and river mouth luck I think.  I'm a sea urchin nut too! I eat em right off the beach.... Couldn't believe my luck last time when I stumbled across em.. Jigged 2 soapys at Chinamens around midnight-  but they were just under.... Fingers, legs and toes crossed, the mumma can't be far off if they are biting again this time!!

Only bait we used were mulies... any other tips/ preferences?????

If you can get hold of some mullet they

have been very successful for the big tailor up there.
If you have a legal sized tailor to spare, a nice fillet of tailor is one of the best mulloway baits you can get.

Kalbarri fishing

Fri, 2009-09-25 09:39

If you have time a short trip to Lucky Bay 25km south of Kalbarri is really worth a fish. drive into the shacks and onto the main beach. Take it easy the sand is usually very soft but the fishing is excellent. Large Mulloway, sharks, tailor and many other species are taken on a regular bases. I visit the area about six times a year and cant wait to get back each time.

Kalbarri - Lucky Bay

Fri, 2009-09-25 11:44

Fresh mullet aways works well in the area. have a paddle in the lagoon at Lucky Bay some excellent fishing. have you taken a look at Port Gregory. If not turn of at Northampton and take the coast road and take a look. Some outstanding fishing all the way along this 60km stretch of coast. Locals always happy to give info. Big tailor are starting to be caught all over the area in numbers.

Colin the fishing around town is just starting to pick up. Tailor at dusk, Mulloway and sharks into the night. When the swell is down good Dhies and Trout are being caught in close.

ill be up at wagoe/ lucky

Fri, 2009-09-25 12:27

ill be up at wagoe/ lucky bay. we leave tonight. If you see a jeep cherokee give a wave.

Try and get a boat across the river in kalbarri and fish frustrations and/or oyster reef. Kalbarri boat hire will take you across for $5 and they pick you up when your ready. On that side of the river big tailor and mulloway are a regular catch.

Sunday would probably be the best day for this as the swells dropping saturday from 4m.

Unfortunately they have

Unfortunately they have specific operating hours, so you cant get across for a dawn or dusk session. I guess you could stay overnight though and fish both (you'd be stranded overnight of course, and not sure about camping regulations).

Makes it pretty easy to get across and wander around for a day though. Just ring the bell when you want to go back.
