I took my boat (6.4m ally) up there for new years and it was the first time Id been offshore there. We didnt go further than say 5-6 km out and got into some good fish and the mackies and tuna were already there. Just try trolling some lures in 23-30m while sounding out some likely ground. North or south are both good and just keep your ear open when you get up there. Always willing to give some tips at the tackle shop too.

We went up last april for

We went up last april for the first time in our 4.5m tinny.... We found you don't have to go far at all, we went about 5-6km North in about 15m of water. We sounded around for some ground & before long we had a big bream, rankin, bald chin & as much fun as you wanted with sambos (until the Sharks turned up that is) the following day we trawled north of the river in 15m and landed 3 Spanish macks! Back at the ramp by 9.30am (brother got sick!)just watch out for whales, we had a humpback come up 30m from our boat...

You have a narrow inshore strip north and south of the river, out to 14 fathoms, a strip of ground in 20 fathoms out the front ( called The Three Mile) , then it is a long way to the next ground if you want to bottom bash. Exactly 8.8 NM west of the rivermouth, to be exact. Once you find that , there is a lot , just go any direction out you want. South, off the cliffs, there is lot of ground in 24 fathoms not that far out ( 3 nm and wider), but tends to be very patchy for fish--I have no doubt you could clean up at the right time, but a big IF. as you go further north (from 10nm north), a lot more inshore ground. Just be aware that seabreezes are usually still strong that time of year, you would need to be very careful with the forecast if you intended heading north any distance, unless you are running a 7 metre -plus boat and don't mind getting a real hiding coming home.

shallow ground as ralph said you dont need to go far just read your sounder and use the contours!

Kalvarri classic saw us hookninto some kegs out at 3mile n on 30m line nth n south.

Having said that check the weather nif you get an e to ne day they are the ones to head north or west!

We went out 17mile other dayin a 4.6m boat but the weather was perfect for it!

Brought back memories of crayn out there ralph!!!

Use your head study the charts n watch your sounder n youll get fish!!

If its your first time up there mate be Careful heading out the mouth can get quiet messy in there on a big swell.
Just time your run in and out between sets if the swells up.
You should not have a problem though.

Fishing, great time to chase the mackerel trolling along around the 15-23m mark both south to the bluff and north to the sand patch. You should come over some ground while trolling.

Good Luck

have alook in the WA boat launching site thread in the boating section--down near the bottom Ihave done a section on Kalbarri, with the mouth, ramps, etc. Since then, they have added a couple more markers further out. Haven't updated the pix yet.
