Kalbarri Offshore

 G'day Gang

Before I start, i confirm i have used the search function on this site.

I am at Kalbarri for 8 days from this Saturday with a 24ft Kevlacat. From what I can devise i need to head SW some 20-30 NM to find good ground. That is not a problem, but i was hoping to take my 8 year old out so looking for something a bit closer....any tips?

Also, from what i can gather, the ground in close proximity is fairly flat but has some coral. Is this correct (ie no structure but still fairly productive)?

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Cheers

suggestions

Hi Brent

Plenty of options mate - a few suggestions for you. I generally find the Northern ground more productive then the South...but know a few guys who would argue the opposite too.

- if you head north out of the mouth for about 5nm, there is a stretch of ground that runs to about 15nm. Only have to be about 0.5nm offshore. Sound around and you will find plenty of ground / fish. Good snapper etc. Drag a couple of Halco's as you go - plenty of mackies have been caught along here. depth about 15-25m
- if you head due west - to the 50m ground, you will find some ground. look for schools and fish the contours as a start. More likely to be flatter coral ground then large lumps....but there is a mix
- south to Wagoe area - plenty of ground and easy to find. Along the way, give Pot Alley a go - plenty of fish have been caught along there. Also, in the 20-30m water, you will find schools and a few lumps. Plenty of snapper down that way. The shallower water close to the bluff there also holds good fish.
- if you get some good weather - the Abrolhos ground about 35nm due west has been great to us over the years - big hike though

Unfortunately, like all new places...time and searching about is going to be required! but they are there. Hope that helps a little and good luck!

I have found the ground

I have found the ground 20-30nm to the north is awesome, only problem is when it's time to come back if it blows from south it is a long trip back. Last time I was there got good Reds in 50m.

I found good ground with all

I found good ground with all sorts of fish (dhus, baldies, red throat etc) no more than half a mile (or closer) from the cliffs both north and south of the rivermouth. It was quite easy to come across good patches and I was anywhere between 4 and 10 mile each way. That was in September but for this time of year a good approach might be to troll some lures for an hour and mark ground, then head back and fish the best looking spots.

Im certainly no guru, only had the one fishing trip there and got out 3 times, but was able to find a feed each time.

Beautiful place, especially if the wind is down. Good luck.
