Karratha Fishing

 Hi everyone,

I'm going up to Karratha for a week next week, and hope to squeeze some fishing time in :)

just wondering if anyone can give me any general pointers on the fishing up there?

I know the tides are pretty full on, I'll have a 4x4, just wondering what species will be around at this time of year..

Cheers guys

Jo :)

Probably one of the crapiest times to fish up there in my oppinion... should be able to get bream, small trevs and queenies but all the good stuff usually go a bit quiet.

Cleaverville, the causeway at point Sampson, Sams creek . Best land based around there i reckon. DONT FORGET INSECT REPELLENT lol!!! You will massively regret it if you fish sunset and after without protection. Months of the itchiest legs ever. Damn sandflies. I found out the hard way lol....

The causeway...

Agree with the comments about the wind, I am working on Varanus Island and the wind is shocking at the moment. Tight lines.

As mentioned above landbased can be tough

But the causeway, the creek mouth past the delapidated hatchery (same creek as the causeway) near PT Sampson. Fish the low side of the causeway on an outgoing tide with floating lures or plackies kept off the bottom. It is very snaggy but can land you some nice jacks like Tailor marc's.

Cleaverville river on an incoming and also even back beach towards the left as you drive down on incoming, high and top outgoing has landed a few threadfin's lately I hear.

Even poor old Hearson produce the odd good fish on ingoing to high. Nice whiting just  1 to 2m off the beach.

But others worth a try.

Sandflies = a expensive visit to the Drs to get steroids to calm the itch, so use Bushmans. U will regret it if you dont, so be warned.

Thanks for the replies everyone :)

I'll check out the spots in Pt Sampson, I've got aerogard hopefully that will keep the biteys away, I never go anywhere without insect repellent when fishing!

Cheers

Be a little aware

Thu, 2012-05-31 09:21

Our midgies tend to laugh at Aerogard. The more DEET the better, Bushman's Orange in spray or cream!!!

DEET has some minor risks. See this Yanky bit "When used according to label directions, millions of people have used DEET repellents to provide protection against mosquitoes and ticks with minimal risk. Nevertheless, no repellent is 100 percent safe and all repellents must be used carefully. Use of DEET concentrations above 50 percent have been associated with increased skin irritation and similar reactions. In very rare circumstances, slurred speech, confusion and seizures have been associated with the use of DEET, particularly in children"

Better than a few nights scratching yourself to death, or paying the Dr's to get some steroids to calm it down.

I use to make up a mixture of baby oil, tea tree oil and anaseed oil !

You need to apply more often, but it is better for you.

I use to use it in Darwin - when I was a guide and fishing 7 days a week - it's not good to use that much repelent on your skin.

Insect repelent and lures ( also bait depending on your style ) don't mix, fish do not like DEET !
