small boat advice for Shark Bay
Submitted by syddie on Wed, 2012-05-30 09:03
Hi all,
Just wondering if it would be doable (safe) to travel from Denham to Useless Loop to fish, with a 4.5 CC polycraft and 60hp 4stroke 70ltr tank + 20ltr jerry. Looking like some good weather coming up with low swell, lightish winds (max 10-12kts) dropping off in the arvo for the trip back.
Would like peoples thoughts on this as I haven't been boating in this region before. approx 50 nMile round trip I'd expect.

Its doable
but pick your weather well
I' ve taken a 40 gallon drum of fuel over for mates on a 4.1 m poly
but i've had also had a chartacter building experience on a 27 ft ali -that bay stand up with an extremely short, sharp chop
very quickly, same weekend a 30 m cray boat and 2 small craft went over - i left the friday arvo which was the start of it.
if you gety there on big tides see if u can time your trip to have tide and wind the same way.

Pick the right weather and you should be fine, but in saying that I've fished at steep point and it was nice conditions there all day but when we left to come home, the small sharp chop that the wind whipped up in the bay was very nasty. That combined with the wicked tides it was a bumpy ride home. Best advice be careful mate

Shark Bay
As others have said, Shark Bay can get a very steep chop, particularly on a strong easterly. I have had to overnight on Dirk Hartog (Whitnell Bay) when it was too rough to head back to Denham in a 24 foot glass boat. We could have done it, but we would have had no teeth left by the time we got to Denham. If you do get caught out, it can often glass off late in the day, so maybe sit tight and wait and see if a late run home is possible. By the same token, Shark Bay is not a great place to be finding your way around in the dark.

One trip you have to do in a small boat. took me 3 hours to get back in my 475 trailcraft due to sou-wester and 1mtr chop.you cant let go of the wheel and ride the waves all the way. you may want to go up the island a bit for better fishing, weather permitting but if it starts to blow up a little on way over turn back.

Tank will be at Steep Point
Tank will be at Steep Point Sunday on for a week...if you get stuck in the area due to weather come ova and look for a 4.5m ali centre console - 3 blokes on it...we can help out if you need a camp and a feed for the night...weather, check....Safety gear, check...enough fuel...check, confident in where I'm going, check...know how my boat handles, check...food, check...water, check...options if it turns nasty, check?
Have fun!

Denham to useless loop and
Denham to useless loop and return = 50 nm???. check your calculations, I have just done denham to shelter bay (near steep point) which is 28 nm one way and useless loop would be half that distance at most?? without checking the chart I reckon useless loop would be much less than 15 nm from denham. the shipping channel is about 8 nm from denham. Definitely check the weather conditions, denham sound can be a real bugger in any sought of south easterly!

calculations
Hi Randall,
I was working on around 20nm to the rock wall down in Useless, including deviations. Double that for the return + 10 for exploring. Thinking about fuel usage mainly.
Thanks for the offer Tank.
Will watch the weather closely and take supplies in case we need to stay over.
Does anyone log on with ACRM?
