I'd be trying to get a job at

I'd be trying to get a job at Fisheries doing some catch, tag and release work from the safety of a boat!

I'm a kayak angler. Firstly i'll mention there was a brilliant article written by a fellow kayaker named Brett in the Feb/March '09 edition of the Western Angler. I could possible scan and email you the article if you like, as i'll guarantee it will assist you in chosing the right kayak for yourself and the type of fishing you'd like to do.

Keep in mind if you plan on mostly trolling, you really want something with a good effort:speed ratio, as it's an enduring form of yak fishing, even for the fittest.

Stable, because you'd probably be doing most of your trolling more than a kilometer off shore, even though sharks of course, venture alot closer to shore than that.

Consider the position of the rod holders on the kayak. When you're looking at yaks, imagine yourself physically dropping the paddle (unless you get a peddle yak), and reaching for the rod. It should be done with minimal twisting of the body and with ease...especially when dealing with sharks of considerable size (4m+)

I assume you mean you are

I assume you mean you are surf fishing and only us the Yak to take your bait out. Another alternative if you dont  mind getting wet is to simply use a surfboard 9 footer or so,to take your baits out.  maybe keep your bait in a bucket or something so you spill any red stuff in the water until your on the spot. Then theres always helium or maybe kites ...I watched a cool vid a while ago done in Exmouth using a kite system, looked ok they also used it to take out lures it was an impressive Vid ...Not sure if it took off or not, but of course you need offshore winds to do it. Many many years ago I heard about guys using a sail system to take baits out in the surf ,and believe you didnt need an offshore wind to do it, but never saw it operate.

Back to your question...  try gumtree ,you can pick them up there cheap ( especially with the current politics), most wouldnt mind if you give it a try first to see if its the right thing for you.

yea mate might have a look on gum tree and see if i cant get one off there or as brenz has said he's got one hes looking at selling might be interested in.

its for paddling out baits like 4kg mullet and snall stingrays to like 6 to 8kg. if anyone has a good cheap brand that could help out would be helpful

I've been yak fishing for 3

Tue, 2012-07-17 20:15

I've been yak fishing for 3 years now, and I do the same thing but my Xfactor is way too big for just that.

If thats all your doing, and you should be sure because its a bit to fork out for if you decide you want to fish the blue or get into the Bream, then I would look at a mob in Gympie way in Williton I cant remember the name but they are in Gumtree a lot they do a nice 9ft yake Sit on top very stable for $400.For a $50 bond he will let you take it home for the weekend and try it.

But as mentioned before check out Brett's articles in Western Angler  or chase him up on here I think he is Alby Mangles on this forum.

Otherwise the Yakfish west forum you will find everything you need to know about yak fishing there. Brett runs the forum and is Shufoy on there

guy in willeton is very similar hull design (virtually identicle...have paddle them both and cant spot the dif) to adventure kayaks(spirit) torpedo 125. great hull for that sort of work...have one for that very reason and as a back up for my mini-x and have loved it for the money pay...stability is great...plenty of spare leg room to drop a mullet or 3 on there with you. i would look at either of those two for your usage from the sounds of it. oh and same price or there abouts to.
