Keeping the jig vertical?

Hey guys, just recently decided to try out the jigs and soft plastics, purchased myself a stradic 5000fj with saber game jigging rod. I did do my research before heading out on the boat for the first time with the jigs, and a common tip was to keep the jig and plastics vertical, how ever I struggled to keep my jig vertical , I was only fishing in 20ms and wind was not a big hassle on the day with a pretty slow drift, while using 100 gram jig and even got to a 2oz plastic

Could it come down to a rookies technique? Or maybe the we were drifting too quickly ?

cheers aidos

if you're drifiting quickly you're best to chuck it forward of the drift to allow some working of it, even drop it back a few times when it starts to go towards the rear, i have hooked fish on some pretty awful angles before, but generally it's a case of wind up and chuck it again.

Downsize your leader and braid. Perhaps your leader & braid are too thick and creates a lot of water drag ?

100g jigs are usually enough for 20m ...

Yeah will have to try that next time I'm out, I didn't mind winding up so frequently in 20m, just didn't want to have to keep doing it in the deeper waters,

atm I am running 40lb braid with 60lb Fluro carbon leader, do you recommended down grading on that?

On softies I use 30lb fluro and pe2 or 3 depending on outfit. Caught cobia up to 18kg on it so pretty confident in it. Big dhuie will stuff you but hey that's half the fun. Jig wise pe3 with 40lb fluro or 80lb supple. Learn to tie the sebel knot well - this really helped my confidence to downsize leader and main.

use the FG knot for connecting  PE mainline to FC leader.

Use only PE main line if possible. Highest Tensile strength for thiness

good luck!
