King George Advice

Hit the Southern Flats last weekend for squid and king george

Targeted the areas where sand & weed meet and i've seen them there in calm conditions before

Did manage to get one sized and one undersized but we got absolutely smashed by Butterfish. There were blowies but managed to keep that down by putting a berley bucket against the boat as soon as they turned up keeping them close by while casting away from the boat.

Anyone have some advice on avoiding the butterfish to increase KG catches or is it just par for the course on Southern Flats & Parmelia bank?

 I think it's just a lottery

I think it's just a lottery really in those areas. I've always felt that if there's kgs in the mix they will get the bait first though. Or atleast I hope that. There's some pretty serious butter fish around at the moment though, we got some stonkers that had me calling big kgs last trip out.

I've found on the southern flats that you have to keep moving around til you find them...try to keep your bait (fresh squid tentacles are my fave) on the sand, next to the weed, and go easy on the berley and don't anchor up  until you actually see/catch a king george.

Slippery buggers

I've always found that if the KG's are around, you will catch them quite quickly, especially bigger ones who only seem to come along a few at a time at best, but if the trumps or butteries move in, then you have to move to a new spot. I've always used a combination of prawn and squid on a 3/0 circle wide gap hook. I've spent a lot of time targeting just KG's and I have a good idea what works, especially for me down here in Geographe (barren) Bay.

cheers

Dale

I fish Ocean Reef to Mindarie

Wed, 2013-11-27 09:11

I fish Ocean Reef to Mindarie and dont usually have to venture very far out to find the big KGW. I have most success on the Extra Life Sardines (vacume packed) cunt into 1/3's. As mentioned above I also believe if the KGW are around they will hit your bait before the bycatch and usually within a number of seconds of your sinker hitting the bottom!

Cheers

Definately moving around

Wed, 2013-11-27 11:08

Definately moving around helps.  If you get butter fish pull up anchor and move somewhere else.  Also try drifting around.  You will get butter fish but if your in the right area you can pick up a good variety of KGs, sandies, flathead, herring etc.

King George Advice!!

Wed, 2013-11-27 22:27

Tradewind - A fish there myself and filmed there just recently for the new series of Fishing WA!

That Ep is airing 08/12/13  4.30pm ..... Inshore/Southern Flats/Cockburn Sound KG’s ..... if that helps!!

I dont anchor at all only drift ...... casting to sand holes with weed around and using the Black Magic Whiting snatcher rig!

No berley at all and I get mainly KG whiting with the occasional blowfish or wrasse as bycatch!

Hope that helps!
