Lake crackenback ( info)

Has anyone fished there? Is it any good? Are there big fish? Or is there fish?. Going over for a trip . I was wondering is it worth taking some fish gear:):).can only sight see some much. Staying 4 ,5 nights at lake. Any info would be great. Only going to take plastics and few lures.

From memory small trout available

Years ago but it certainly used to hold trout both Browns and rainbows up to a couple of pounds .....pretty sure like most waterways in the area you need a licence to fish but they are cheap for short period stays.  Very light line and soft plastics should work, they weren't around when we fished it and we used worms suspended under bubble floats

Lake Crackenback

It's a resort lake.  I understand it is stocked, but may even contain a wild population.  I reckon you would get fish in it, and licences can be purchased at the resort.

On the matter of big fish, Lake Jindabyne is about 20km down the road.  This one holds "little johnny" sized fish and can be fished from the shore or in a hire tinny.  I have seen some trophy fish from the lake over the years.  We camped adjacent to the lake some years ago and had reasonable success, and I would be happy to help in any way with spots, techniques, baits, etc.

Local knowledge about prevailing conditions at the time is very helpful.  There are a couple of good shops where the owners will be able to give you quality advice about what is going on at the time.

Go to for me would be small celtas if your spinning, tassie devils if you are trolling, live mudeye and worms if you are bait fising and "match the hatch" with the flys.  Not sure about the plastics but I would make sure the plastic looked like a small trout.  You must fish as light as possible and be "stealthy".

Don't forget the "woolies".  Nice part of the world.

Pretty cold at this time of year

You will probably need chains to get in. LIke others have said, lots of small fish. Great fun though. Jindy and eucumbene hold larger fish. It can be tough at this time of year for fishing. Most rivers are closed, so I would probably stick to the heads of the dams where post and pre spawn fish will be. 1 bonus though, you won't need an esky to keep your coldies.

 I was snowboarding in

Tue, 2016-08-09 17:14

I was snowboarding in thredbo 3 weeks ago which is about 40km further from crackenback. Was looking through the paper and saw a trophy rainbow caught at lake Jindabyne and it was really a monster.

It can be freezing there, when I was in thredbo driving past the resort turnoff at lake crackenback there was snow in the trees and on the side of the road and in the ski villages temperatures were recorded as low as -20 degrees. Good luck!
