land based snapper?
Submitted by cuthbad on Wed, 2010-03-31 23:38
Went down for a tailor sesh tonight but struck out getting plagued by small pike/snook. Around 7:30 i landed a 38cm snapper, have got a few small ones down there before but this was the biggest ive caught.
Made me wonder if anyone has got any size ones yet his year?
Id love to chase land based snapper this winter but dunno how to go about it. any advice about rigs etc appreciated!
Cheers,
Adam

i'll be watchin this thread,
i'll be watchin this thread, i also wanna see if anyone out there has had much luck since the last blows. I havent had a pinkie bash from shore lately but am looking to if the wind gods decide to give us another bashing.
As for snook... So annoying to pick those up. Try spinning at higher depth as snook tend to hang below tailor as they feed. Snook are usually hanging round under tailor in most cases, i always have to adjust my depth when i pick one up. If sized, keep the snooks, neck it, bleed into bucket and chop it up as burley. They're oiley so they're good for it. Doesnt taste anything flash so dont bother taking it home.
Give us a pm if you want some company for a snapper bash sometime and i'll be more than happy to join ya for a bash if work permits. I get bored as snapper bashing sometimes lol.

Snook are awesome baits
I would be chucking them straight back out with a big hook in them.

beach snapper
i have only lucked into them of the beach but i will help you were i can
all the times i have caught snapper off the sand it has been blowing its freckle off and really uncomfortable like 35plus knots from the norwest and raining but i dont know if the rain has anything to do with it
as for bait i have tricked them with yellow tail(my favorite) herring, mulies, strips of Skippy and scaile mackerel
rig i use are as simple as a large running ball sinker straight to the hilt of the to hook but a standard surf paternoster or running rig even slide baiting but this isn't needed as distance is not a factor
same as chan i also like some company on my snapper sessions so drop us a p.m and i will be glad to join you
cheers ethan

Boat channel
Used to get some big ones on the northern side of Bunbury inner harbour boat channel opposite Cable sands when the wind was howling from the north west with big seas and swell.Whole mullet on a 9-10/0 suicide hook and baitcast as far out in to the channel and left to sit.
All in the days before digital cameras so no pics to show but some were round the 8-10kg mark
Cannot see any reason why they wouldn't still be caught now when the weather turns to crap

got a decent size snook
got a decent size snook friday, used the fillets and picked up 2 nice tailor while everyone using mulies was only picking up little snook, so must be decent bait.
Gonna start saving up some snook, herring etc for bait for a go at the snapper. Thinking a fillet on two snelled 9/0s with a running sinker, maybe mulie guts tied around the outside with bait string as well. Does that sound right?
How deep do you reckon the water has to be, I like fishing near reef on northern beaches, have heard they used to hold some nice snapper at the right times?
Cheers

got into some snapper
got into some snapper landbased on sat up to 5kg sorry no pics
as for depth it doesn't really matter as they come in shallow to feed during the storms but somewhere close to deep water ie 10m plus is a good place to start looking

nice hadnt seen that wind comin in tomorrow! time to find the waterproof gear in the garage.
John I have no idea about rigs, gona try fillets on a couple of like 7/0 hooks on heavy mono leader. North mole is a treck so might try near boyinaboat reef from hillareys south wall or somewhere else close by.

i found some fresh(ish)
i found some fresh(ish) small squid about 110gm each, do you think these are too big a bait to use for land based snapper?
If so i might try n get a bit creative with cut mulie squid combined baits. on snelled 7/0s as suggested.
Great to be fishing for something different, love my shark fishing but this should be an exciting challenge over winter.
Whats the bet i get bitten off by a shark though lol?
(EDIT) never mind just saw young yakkers post, whole squid it is

hey dude, the squid is fine as long as you got enough hooks holding it to ensure the hookup. Try rock crabs, go grab a few from a rock groyne before you trek out mate. Be sure to let us know how you did. Good luck n have fun mate. I'd join u if i didnt have work the next day lol. Always another day for it.

2 snelled circle hooks on
2 snelled circle hooks on 80lb trace going to a 3 way swivel attached to south african casting sinker using scalie mackerels works a treat!
Make sure to have your drag on really lose, as the snapper will so often run with the bait without actually swallowing it. I find the shimano baitrunner 6500B are the best for snapper for this particular reason and there shear power and durability.
As for ASI, just off the end is good. I know there is a reef some distance from the jetty itself that is home to many sharks and bigger fish. And somewhat these are the fish that are caught.
And be sure to burly up. Use some of the mackies if you can mixed in with regular burly. Works for me!
I got mine in still conditions, at 10 am at high tide. however that was from the mole
All the best!

gonna have a go this week i reckon. does anyone know anywhere north thats worth a shot? someone at blue water scarborough mentioned ocean reef marina? Im not really keen on driving down to north mole plus it gets kinda busy at times but i will if i have to.
i kinda like the idea of fishing off the beach but cant think of anywhere that you can cast out to deep enough water... all the reef i can think of off the beach is like 6 or 7m deep at the best

Nothing to report but I must admit I was a little slack and did not put in much time. Live baited a herring out for a few hours for nothing. Herring were around, I hooked plenty on plastics. All released including the live bait.

I fished ASI Groyne for
I fished ASI Groyne for years chasing snapper after a big NW blow only to have no luck until I changed my strategy.
I like everyone else used to cast out as far as I could only to get nothing. The day I dropped my bait just in front of the rocks I hooked up on snapper straight away, and good size.
Unfortunately because of my previous fishing methods casting out wide, I used to fish with a couple of rods, but when fishing in close to the rocks you can't do this. You have to be holding your rod the whole time as when that fish takes your bait... he's going to try and bust you up on those very rocks your fishing close to.
I had one occasion where there was over 15 other people fishing near me and beside me and no one caught anything, yet I got 3 good size snapper in a 3 hour period.
Hope this helps.

I've caught a fair few crackin snappers from the stones, and I usually use about 30lb mono, if not 30lb braid with 50lb leader etc.
Im thinking of giving the lighter tackle a go, do you think 16lb mono would do the job from the stones??
