Latest bang bang trip
Submitted by big john on Thu, 2012-07-26 17:31
Spent six days last week travelling around the Victoria River District knocking off some of beach kids friends.
Tally for the week was 3 pigs, 2 dogs, 3 bull camels and 76 donkeys.
Was hoping to find a young camel for meat but no joy this trip.
Here's a few pics.

Well said mate - it is in the general discussion forum, let the haters hate as far as I'm concerned.
Thanks for posting, and keep the reports coming!
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Some nice ferals there John.
Some nice ferals there John. I used to do a fair bit of hunting myself back up in Darwin and Katherine. Unfortunately around here in Perth and down south i have been relegated to bunnies, foxes and the odd feral cat. Have seen some dead pigs on the side of the road near collie but think dogs are the main way to get them. Even some Deer if you are willing to put the time in around Boddington. But alas would love to get back up North into the bigger game country again.
I too love eating camel though its very hard to find anywhere in perth that sells it, only compounded by the fact that last i heard there is only one functioning abattoir for camels and its in Peterborough? SA
Used to hunt pigs for the game meat trade in Darwin. We got 40c a kilo. Was pretty good times, a few big porkers paid for fuel, food, piss and ammo for the weekend!!!!
In regards to the public display of hunting pics, personnaly i like seeing well taken pics of it, but i have learnt from seeing threads like this and comments on various other sites from pics people have posted up, that you are better off; keeping the pics to yourself, hanging them around you home for mates and guests to see(if your missus will allow it), putting up at your local gun store or chucking up on a dedicated hunting forum. Just it always seems to stir to much controversy. Almost a bit like someone posting up a pic of a Blue Groper take spearfishing.......... always seems to ruffle feathers.
Good onya for doing your bit to try and lessen the problem these feral animals cause to the natural Australian bush(and having some good old fashion adventure too). I think if some city people actually got out to some the remote center or north of Oz they would be shocked by A. how many of these feral animals are around and B. how much destruction they cause.
To hunting and gathering :)

More eloquently put than my comment
But that was what I was saying.
BigJohn, I didnt say you "were" trolling, it just might look like it, because it was bound to get comments.
As for me, have absolutely no problem ridding Oz of feral's introduced by niave Europeans for their pleasure or use. Wild horses I dont know, the Man from Snowy River and the Brumbies sort off an Ozzy legend. As for everything else, as long as it is not native, go for it. I have been known to rid Aus of more than a few Foxes around Cunderdin, and heaps of feral goats around Leinster.
Also remember on here if someone takes a ray etc, and just leave it all hell breaks out. Just because it is a fishing site doesnt mean that we like people to kill fish for the sake off it. Take a feed sure, but if anyone post a pic of a dead fish that wasnt eaten, taken in error etc the author sure hears about it.
As mentioned I am for it, but not for displaying it on a fishing site where it is bound to get negative comments, and stirr up passion. So far this thread has maintained some sense of manners, even though passionate, and that is the way it should be in a debate.

Say
You did say it "surely must be seen as trolling" and that I baited people to possibly make them upset. I've got far better things to do with my time than troll on a website, and to be honest, its a f$%#^* insult.
I'll keep doing what I do, you keep cyclone predicting or whatever and we'll leave it at that.
As for the thread title, it is in the general discussion board, therefore it wont be about fishing, it could be about a sex tour to Thailand but that's not my thing.

F**k em BJ. I would have called it 'Friday the 13th massacre Pilbara/Gascoyne style' or something. (Assuming it was about 3 weeks ago). Id keep doing it while you can because before you know it, 4 corners will do a report on it and Julia will outlaw it because it made a few bunny cuddlers cry.
It would now seem that most of the introduced foreign vermin in our country now have university degrees and live in the city.

Must??
I think there is a difference between Must and Might.
"But on a fishing site surely this might be seen as a troll, trying to upset a few"
"Baited people to POSSIBLY"
It was asking not accusing. Some might see it the wrong way, not must see it the wrong way.
As mentioned above Hunted for yrs, and in Africa shot everything that moved on the farms, including some rabbid Leopards (2). I certainly would not display a trophy shot of this because they are magnificent creatures. And not everyone would undestand that it was to put them out of misery because of an illness.
I am all for ridding Aus off feral animals that do not belong here.
And all I was pointing out was that this might not be the right "place" to putt these shots up, without causing some to get upset.
As for me I have no issues with this post personally, but can see that others have taken offense. I would rather myself see these pictures than some "fish Kill" shots, purely because it reflects badly on our sport and pastime, especially with Greenies and Pew waiting with baited breath to pounce at any given opportunity and discredit fishing.
I personally wont shoot native animals when there is so many ferals, but thats just what I would do. No issue with Roos being culled or hunted, I just wont.
BJ take it as you want, but I was pointing something out, rather than accusing.
Lets get on with fishing.

Spin
You can spin it how you like, I feel your initial choice of words was a slur hidden behind namby pamby pollie speak.
As for others being 'possibly' offended, that's there problem, what made you their social conscience?
These pics are also pretty tame, I deliberately didn't put side profiles of lung shot or head shot animals. As you may be able to imagine, big critters contain a lot of blood.

Sure BigJohn
Enough said about basically nothing. Just trying to point out something.
Lets get over this and back to fishing and footy.
PS: Just reread the above. Never had an issue with you BJ. Why would I? And why would I try and slurr you without a reason. My statement that some would be offended is for all to see. Not ever a personal attack, and if perceived that way its Typing vs talking.
Sorry if it offended. Was not intended. Just stated what I felt that some on a fishing site might not like it. Done.

All done John
I think that is a good idea.
But is a troll that big a deal??
Been on here for about 5-6yrs aswell and thought it was basically a way off stirring up some(one/people).
Wouldnt have thought it something someone gets offended by, but if this is different to what I thought, and I have inadvertantly caused upset by what I thought a troll was, ie more off a stirr than something serious, then I will stand corrected. And I will withdraw the comment publically on here.
Someone please explain "troll" to me so that we can move on from this.

Then I am wrong. I thought that it was just meant to stirr up comments. But obviously BJ's story is true.
BJ as stated I will apologise in a separate post for calling you a troller. I had this all wrong. And as mentioned above I was just trying to say how some might feel.

Mate I had the Idea of a Troll wrong
And I didnt mean at all to accuse you of being a liar and being misleading.
I am for ridding this place of ferals (in all forms).
I do very much apologise if I said this wrong and certainly no offense intended.
Lets get over it, and get fishing. As for the footy, I dont think we will agree (if I have my recollection right).
Cheers

Good stuff Big John.
I've got no problem with the photos personally but then again I'm one of those country boys that was brought up butchering our meat with my old man. I can understand the people that don't want to see this kind of stuff, some people just don't have the stomach for it. Perhaps a clearer title would make all the difference "Latest bang bang trip" might arouse people's curiosity & they are not prepared for what they find. Maybe put in brackets: (Hunting Photos) - so it's clear what's in the thread & then the people who don't want to see know to stay clear.
As for the comment about leaving a bunch of blowies sitting on a jetty, Big John is hardly leaving these animals where dozens of people are going to be. They are out in remote places that not that many people go to. They don't need to be cleaned up, other animals & a couple of weeks will take care of that. Unlike the blowies that get left on jetties & some poor bugger has to come along & clean up the mess that someone else left.

Yeah I know Rob, that's why I never refered to them as a feral animal. They annoy the crap out of me but I actually release them unharmed, killing the few I catch isn't going to make the slightest difference to thier numbers. I'd rather release them than lug them off to a bin or give fisherman a bad name by leaving them laying around.

It would seem you have had an overwhelmingly positive response to your post, take it and run with it I say.
Maybe as suggested just put up a better title and we will have better grounds to drill the naysayers.

Love your work BJ. Surprised by some of the negative comments though. One thing I have noted though is where on earth is your esky on the grizzly???? Unfathomable that such an incredible beast is not adorned with such precious cargo. The mind boggles.

I dont have a gun but I do
I dont have a gun but I do get out with a few of the boys chasing goats up the coast or pigs up river but there is ALWAYS a full esky on board. Never know when youre gonna get stuck. Hahahaha. Biggest challenge has been shooting goats off the reef from a boat. Certainly tests the skils. It really is quite amazing to see 100's of goats standing out on the reef edge chewing weed. The bastards will eat anything. Or perhaps they like shellfish!!! Hahahaha

Wow. Big reaction
Strewth John you got em going here! I dunno, I didn't like the pics, but then I've never done it. Some think it automatically makes you a greeny tree hugging liberal city slicking knob if you don't get a chubby over them. No, its just not for me, but like Zoe I had no idea the feral animals were that much of a problem.
Must be awesome to hit something scoped at long range, I am one who has only done it on game software, and it gave me a buzz, didn't help anyone either. I reckon if I had the opportunity I'd love to give it a shot (heheh)
Every forum I know of has off topic areas not relevant to the apparent purpose of the forum. I didn't expect to see pics like these in a fishing site, but as soon as I saw the first one I (same as all) could hit the back button.

People that have a problem with Big Johns pics/post...are the same people that have a problem with culling great whites, stopping boat people and generally frowning on everything that might be politcally incorrect....You are why our society is like it is!!! Nice pics mate
Pigs are a bloody menace. Before I moved over here a couple of years ago from North Qld, I used to hunt them (with my dogs and a knife though) for the box. Australia exports quite a lot of feral pig meat, as we have the only completely disease free population in the world and the Germans and Austrians especially, love the stuff.
I remember a few years back, the DPI in NSW said that 1/3 of all lambs that die in Australia each year are killed by feral pigs. If you've ever seen live sheep that are stuck in the mud getting ripped apart by the bastards, you'd know what needs to be done. That's not to mention the effect they have on the habitat. They destroy whole paddocks and around Townsville where I am from, the pigs will go into a sugar cane paddock and just destroy the lot. It'll look fine from the outside, but inside there is acres flattened to the ground. They were in plague proportions up that way when I left. All pigs do is destroy wildlife, habitat and livestock. The less of them, the better....

Finally I get to have a say.
Finally I get to have a say. Firstly good post and pics BJ. The pics are good in that they bring a reality highlight to the feral problem in the bush. Saw no one whinging On Buz's post on UFO"S with all the feral cats strung up, it's a dead animal whoopee doo part and parcel of life. Plenty of ferals at the markets in Darwin BJ that could use thinning out ;)
